Performing duties as a telephone operator and police service dispatcherOperating the facility telephone console and handling incoming callsMaintaining a log of all calls through the switchboardMonitoring emergency alarms and phones for police responsesMonitoring the transmissions of the facility’s two-way radiosReceiving and compiling information from various sources relating to police and emergency incidentsTaking appropriate action regarding fire alarms, intrusion, etc.; dispatching and/or notifying appropriate personnelInitiating non-emergency dispatches for police or fire assistanceEnsuring officer safety by checking on officers while on traffic stops or calls for serviceUsing a computer to perform a variety of dutiesProtecting the confidentiality of informationPerforming other duties as assigned Work Schedule: 4-hour and 8-hour shifts between the hours of 7:00am and 11:00pm, including weekend and holidays.  Work schedule is published two weeks in advance. ***RELOCATION EXPENSES AND/OR INCENTIVES ARE NOT AUTHORIZED***

This position includes Selective Placement Factors (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job).  Selective Placements Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position.  Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration. 

The selective placement factors for this position are: 

1. Knowledge of the procedures to transmit and receive communications via a telephone operating system.

2. Knowledge of the procedures to transmit and receive communications via a two-way radio.

IN ADDITION TO THE SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS, THIS POSITION REQUIRES: One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to or at least the GS-4 grade level in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include: answering and referring a variety of incoming calls; monitoring the emergency and normal transmissions of two-way radios; initiating non-emergency dispatches; using a computer to perform clerical duties; and working efficiently under pressure of time and/or stressful conditions. To receive credit for these skills they must be documented in your resume.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: A bachelor's degree or four (4) full academic years of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite may be used in place of experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.  If you are using education to qualify, transcripts are required.

COMBINATION: A combination of specialized experience and successfully completed post high-school education that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of the position is fully qualifying at the GS-05 grade level, but only the semester hours in excess of the first 60 semester hours can be used in place of experience. To qualify by a combination, the total qualifying experience will be calculated as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; and the education will be calculated as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. These two percentages will be added, and the total percentages must equal at least 100 percent.  If you are using a combination to qualify your skills must be documented in your resume and transcripts are required.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

1. Knowledge of the procedures to transmit and receive communications via a telephone operating system and radio procedures.

2. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing with individuals from varied educational backgrounds as well as those with mental or health problems.

3. Knowledge in the use of computers and software programs (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Access).

4. Ability to maintain confidentiality and safeguard sensitive information.

5. Ability to use a keyboard with accuracy.
