Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) is a web service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It gives any customer complete control of their computing resources and lets them run on Amazon's proven computing environment. We enable the global deployment and execution of thousands of applications across tens of thousands of servers worldwide. Amazon EC2 is off to a great start, continues to grow quite rapidly, and constantly surpassing all internal forecasts of adoption. We are continuing to build the team in order to expand on our feature set and manage our rapidly increasing scale.

The EC2 VM Import team is looking for highly intelligent software development engineering professionals to join us and help us to bring the power of the cloud to the Enterprise market. You should be somebody who enjoys working on complex system software, is customer-centric, and feels strongly not only about building good software but about making that software exceed its goals in operational reality. We feel strongly that qualified candidates demonstrate a clear passion for the large opportunity that Amazon EC2 presents and about web services. Candidates should have previously thrived and succeeded in delivering high quality technology products/services in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift fast.

The ideal candidate has broad and deep technical knowledge, typically ranging from front-end UIs through to back-end systems and all points in between. He or she has strong OO design and implementation experience, strong knowledge of web protocols, and an in-depth knowledge of Linux/Unix tools and architecture. Experience with web-based applications and/or web services-based applications, especially at massive scale, will be very applicable and helpful.

This position is located in Herndon, VA.

Minimum of 4 years experience with application design, development and programming with strong mastery of computer science fundamentals: object oriented software design, data structures, time/space complexity
Minimum of two years experience with Unix operating systems: system administration, building software


Bachelor of Science or Masters of Science Degree in Computer Science or related field
Intellectual curiosity and initiative
Strong knowledge of multiple software languages or ability to learn new languages quickly: C or C++, Java, Ruby, Scala, Python, Perl, OCaml
Strong ability to architect solutions from start to finish with full coverage
Experience with hardware virtualization technologies: VMware, Citrix, Microsoft
Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and designing for performance, scalability, and availability
Experience building scalable infrastructure software or distributed systems
Played a leading role in the design, implementation and deployment of a successful system or service
Internet, operating system and software security fundamentals
Sharp analytical abilities and proven troubleshooting skills
Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive
Demonstrated ability to achieve stretch goals in a highly innovative and fast paced environment
