The Bureau of Indian Affairs is the lead agency for the United States in carrying on a government-to-government relationship with the tribal nations. The incumbent serves as an Office Automation Clerk in a term appointment at the Michigan Agency located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The incumbent provides office automation and clerical support duties for the supervisor and staff of the office.


This is a term position not to exceed two years but may be extended for an additional 2 years at managements discretion.


More than one position may be filled from applications received under this announcement in the advertised field offices or other Bureau of Indian Affairs offices in the local commuting area.

The major duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs duties to maintain a smooth flow of

    work which may include the following; making travel arrangements, obtaining office

    supplies, compiling/maintaining working/reference aids or records, maintaining

    status records of assignments, and workload.

    Performs tasks involving duplication and faxing.

  • Uses a personal computer or computer terminal

    with varied keyboard procedures to type a wide variety of materials involving

    different forms, formats, arrangements, preparation, and processing

    procedures. Uses automation software to

    prepare spreadsheets, charts, graphs, etc.

  • Reviews incoming correspondence, reports and

    work requests to determine suspense requirements and proper routing from

    personal determinations or as otherwise indicated. Proofreads work typed personally or by

    others.

  • Receives visitors and telephone calls. Refers to requested person or function or determines

    the person appropriate to handle the contact.

    Takes and refers messages.

By the closing date of this announcement, you must meet the minimum qualification requirements as outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook and as identified in this announcement below.


Experience:


To Qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of general experience which prepared you to do the work of this job. General experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position such as experience manually or electronically filing documents, preparing various types of office correspondence, operating word processing software, receiving telephone calls and visitors, and entering data into automated databases and producing reports. ( Your resume must include starting and ending dates of employment with number of hours worked per week, and typing speed of at least 40 words per minute.) OR


Education:


To qualify based on education, you must have successfully completed two years of education above the high school level. One year is generally defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. OR


Combination:


To qualify based on a combination of education and experience you must have a combination of qualifying education and qualifying experience that add up to meet 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.


You must submit a copy of your college transcripts to support your education claims if you are qualifying for the position based on education. Unless otherwise stated, unofficial transcripts are acceptable. If selected, you will be required to produce official transcripts.


Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements if you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
