United States of America: Advisor, Emergency Nutrition


The Advisor will serve as a critical member of the Emergency Health and Nutrition (EHN) team in supporting EHN strategy and operational plans. To this end, the Emergency Nutrition Advisor will serve as a first responder including leading and/or supporting the nutrition sector in emergencies globally. The Advisor will provide program quality oversight throughout the program cycle, provide technical leadership in program learning and innovation, mobilize resources, and support global and country level advocacy efforts. The Advisor will work closely with Save the Children colleagues from both technical and emergency response departments. The Advisor will coordinate and collaborate with Save the Children International’s emergency structures as well as represent the agency in select global emergency nutrition fora.


Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Impact


Program Quality Oversight in Emergency Nutrition (50%)


  • Provide senior level technical expertise and oversight to ensure SC humanitarian responses adhere to quality standards and benchmarks

  • Deploy to Category 1 and 2 emergencies, as needed, to lead emergency nutrition response (including leading rapid assessments and surveys, devising response plans and master budgets, mobilizing resources, overseeing program implementation, recruitment and procurement);

  • Provide remote backstopping to Category 1 and 2 humanitarian crisis, reviewing response strategies, sector program plans, supporting recruitment, advocacy/communications/ media strategies.

  • In collaboration with emergency nutrition team, play a lead role in building SC staff capacity to design and deliver quality emergency nutrition programming through the development and/or dissemination of training curriculum, evidence-based program standards, guidance, and tools

  • Collaborate with nutrition colleagues, more broadly, to ensure emergency nutrition activities are consistent with country strategic direction, and strive toward integration with other sectors and smooth transition from emergency to development.

Program Learning and Innovation (20%)


  • Provide direction and support to the design, testing, and evaluation of innovations to advance emergency nutrition programming with specific reference to those areas identified as EHN priorities.

  • Monitor developments in the field of emergency nutrition, and identify new operations research opportunities at country and regional levels.

  • Identify innovative field-based emergency nutrition best practices and document and promote up-take

  • Disseminate technical and project materials to ensure key technical people are up to date on the state of the art.

  • Participate in technical meetings and facilitate learning opportunities as delegated.

Resource Mobilization (15%)


  • In consultation with Team Leader, Emergency Nutrition, define emergency nutrition related priorities for public and private fundraising.

  • Provide direct technical support for the development of quality emergency nutrition project proposals, both from SC-US and from SCI members sourcing US-based funding streams

  • Develop and sustain donor and partner relationships, including with academic institutions and technical personnel

Humanitarian Coordination (10%)


  • Participate in SC’s global Emergency Nutrition Technical Working Group (ENWG) and represent the ENWG, as requested, in the broader Humanitarian Technical Working Group and across the SC Global Movement

  • Contribute significantly to the review and/or development of humanitarian technical standards, standard operating procedures, program policies and tools for emergency nutrition

  • Ensure relevant SC personnel are familiar with agreed upon agency principles and procedures

Advocacy (5%)


  • In consultation with Team Leader, Emergency Nutrition, the ENWG and Public Affairs and Communications Team, participate in the development of emergency nutrition related policy and advocacy positions and support their dissemination.

  • Serve as spokesperson for emergency nutrition related policy and advocacy issues both internally and externally as needed

  • Provide support to global and country level advocacy efforts.

Required Background and Experience, Skills and Behaviors



  • Masters’ degree or higher in public health nutrition or related field




  • Considerable field experience in humanitarian or relief work in developing countries (7 years), with extensive work in emergency situations (including quick onset emergency).




  • Experience in developing timely and effective emergency nutrition responses inclusive of a variety of emergency nutrition programming areas required (ie – CMAM and IYCF-E required).




  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French




  • Proven ability to develop and apply monitoring and evaluation plans to determine program results and monitor impact, including conducting and analyzing nutrition surveys and rapid assessments required.




  • Excellent writing, editing, training experience essential in the areas of emergency nutrition; understanding of food security and health concepts and multi-sectoral programming for nutrition




  • Must have strong capacity building skills – explains and demonstrates, provides feedback and reinforcement, aligns performance for success, builds trust, and coaches




  • Strong leadership skills and must be a self starter, independent worker, and a team player at headquarters and in the field.




  • Willingness to travel 30%-35% of the time.




  • Willingness and ability to work in an insecure and hardship environments.
