Public Works Assistant- Regular Less than Half Time - City of Des Moines, IA - Des Moines, IA

Under general supervision, to do varied and responsible work in the protection and maintenance of City facilities.

Work Assignment: Will work (8) eight hour shifts including evenings, nights and weekends; provided work is available. There are no guaranteed hours, shifts will only be available when full-time personnel are on scheduled leave.


Acceptable Experience and Training:


Education and Experience:


  • Any combination equivalent to completion of the tenth grade and some responsible work experience.

License or Other Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Iowa.

Required Special Qualifications:


The City of Des Moines’ Residency Requirement is in effect for this position. Applicant must be a resident of the City of Des Moines within thirteen (13) months of appointment date and maintain residency within the City of Des Moines while employed in this position.


Requires satisfactory criminal, sex offender and if applicable, driving record background checks. Passing of a pre-employment physical and drug screen is required prior to hire.


Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only):


  • Patrols buildings and grounds to check on safety hazards or trespassers.

  • Places barricades and blinkers at traffic hazards.

  • Drives a truck transporting material or employees.

  • Picks up trash in street.

  • Answers telephone and gives information or contacts appropriate departments to pass on information or complaints.

  • May sweep and clean offices and other areas.

  • Receives and dispatches emergency calls on radio.
