Consultant – Interim Deputy Director


Health Alliance International (HAI) is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization and a center of the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington (UW). HAI has been a leader in supporting primary health care systems for over 25 years and currently implements programs with Ministries of Health in Côte d’Ivoire, Mozambique and Timor-Leste. Since 1987, HAI has been at the forefront of health systems strengthening, including Primary Health Care, scaling-up HIV prevention, care and treatment services; improving the quality and utilization of routine health information systems for programmatic decision-making; developing program evaluation and operations research capacity; linking these efforts with improved policy and strategy development; and building sustainable capacity within government institutions.


We are recruiting for a temporary interim Deputy Director (henceforth called the Consultant). The Consultant will work closely with the Executive Director (ED) and the Director of Headquarters (HQ) Operations to provide strategic planning, development, and oversight for the entire organization. The position provides direction, oversight and development assistance to headquarters and international field offices related to establishing and implementing programs and organizational policies and procedures in support of HAI’s mission and vision. The Consultant will work with 13 full-time staff, two part-time staff, seven UW faculty, and the leadership in the three HAI project countries. The Consultant is not an employee of the organization and will not officially be considered a supervisor, but will act as the leader of the administrative unit and provide oversight to 5 staff – the Director of Human Resources, Director of Finance, Senior Grants Manager, Grants Manager and the Assistant to the Deputy Director. The Consultant will work closely with the ED to identify organizational needs and challenges, and help develop approaches to resolve them as needed.


This is a 20 hour per week position which will last for approximately 5 months. Compensation will be based on a negotiated hourly rate and will not include any other benefits.


Qualifications: • Preferred ten years of experience working in a nonprofit organization, including managing multifunctional teams and working with a Board of Directors • Experience managing transitions and leading an organization as an interim director strongly preferred • Working knowledge of nonprofit fiscal and grants management • Experience with organizational assessment and human resource management


General responsibilities: • Provide oversight to a five-member team, including the Director of Human Resources, Director of Finance, Senior Grants Manager, Grants Manager and the Assistant to the Deputy Director • Monitor operations and administrative activities across the organization pertaining to human resources, finances and grants management. • Oversee and ensure adherence to HAI policies and procedures across the organization and designs processes for internal auditing and formal monitoring of HQ and field operations. • Coordinates collaboration with the Board of Directors in strategic planning and policy development


Key projects: • Support program and administrative staff in grant and project proposal development for several key upcoming funding opportunities. • Collaborate with Director of Finance staff to lead the development of the 2016 budget with relevant program and administrative staff • Work closely with Board of Directors to lead work planning for various elements of HAI’s Strategic Plan • Provide targeted support and strategy for the organization’s fundraising efforts • Collaborate with ED to facilitate regular meetings of a 6-person leadership team.


Start date: The start date will be negotiated but should be no later than July 15.
