Surveyor Trainee - State of Ohio - Ashland County, OH

Receives training in operation & maintenance of survey instruments (e.g. total stations, GPS receivers, digital levels, 3-D laser scanners & data collectors); in absence of higher level surveyor, acts as lead worker (i.e., provides work direction and training) over survey field crew(s). Performs road record and deed and plat research. Provides training for lower level technicians in the use of a variety of electronic data collection devices (e.g. total stations, GPS receivers, digital levels, 3-D laser scanners, data collectors & associated equipment). Also uses all of the above equipment. Ensures all safety practices, policies and procedures are followed. Ensures survey crew(s) has all necessary supplies and equipment. Ensures that all equipment is in proper working order and keeps logs of periodic checks.

Gains exposure to all aspects of survey work flow; receives training in software operation including CADD, COGO, GPS, GIS & Microsoft Office software; aides in office calculations, data processing, coordinate computations, traverse adjustment & coordinate system transformations; organizes, digitizes & categorizes survey records & archives.


Researches state, county & city public records (e.g., maps, property deeds, surveys, highway plans, city plans, subdivision plats) &/or utility companies, private engineering firms & surveying firms to provide detailed information to higher level surveyors for further analysis; assists higher-level surveyors in Right-of-Way plan design and drafting.


Operates state vehicles (e.g., trucks, vans), to transport equipment, instruments & personnel to project sites; carries field equipment & instruments through rough terrain (e.g., across creeks, up/down hills, over fences, through marshes); clears brush as required to facilitate surveying operations with appropriate equipment (e.g., machete, brush hook); operates hand tools & small equipment (e.g., posthole digger, sledgehammer, spud bar, jackhammer, power auger).


Minimum Qualifications:
Current certificate as Surveyor-in-Training pursuant to Section 4733.11 (J) of Ohio Revised Code; 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in operation of field survey instruments; valid driver’s license.


Valid drivers license is required.


Major Worker Characteristics:
Knowledge of professional surveying; employee training & development*. Skill in operation & maintenance of survey instruments (e.g., theodolite, transit, electronic distance measurer, automatic level). Ability to prepare & analyze technical survey data & make mathematical calculations to that data; handle routine & sensitive inquiries from & contacts with government officials, property owners & contractors; lift up to 50 lbs. of equipment. This position is overtime eligible based on FSLA standards


If this position is filled internally, the wage rate will be determined in accordance with the contract.


The final candidate selected for the position will be required to undergo a criminal background check. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude an applicant from consideration for a position.
