Telecommunications Operator job - City of North Port, FL - North Port, FL

This position performs highly responsible work in receiving requests for information or emergency assistance from the general public, law enforcement or emergency personnel. The Telecommunications Operator is under the general supervision of the Senior Telecommunications Operator (STO).

Essential Job Functions:


Receives and transmits all incoming emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and provides information to law enforcement personnel using direct radio communication by accessing computerized information regarding criminal histories, active warrants, vehicle registrations, driver’s license status and similar information.


Dispatches for City Animal Control.


Demonstrates a continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.


Maintains appropriate control logs and legends.


Maintains telephone and radio recording systems, including teletype.


Makes Loner calls to residents who live alone.


Updates and maintains emergency contacts for businesses, including monitoring alarms.
Updates database with new addresses and streets.


Maintains security of facility by use of electronic devices associated with communications, including, monitoring video screens, lobby, jail cells, city hall interior door, city hall exterior doors, parking lot, and garage.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


Ability to learn City geography and surrounding areas.


Ability to maintain poise, exercise good judgment and respond quickly in emergencies.


Excellent customer service skills, including ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.


Knowledge of administrative principles and practices.


Ability to use computer software and enter data accurately from a wide variety of source documents.


Ability to plan, organize and use mature judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions in accordance with established policy.


Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.


Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications:


Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Some clerical experience, preferably in the communication area.


Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license by date of hire.


(A comparable amount of training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)
