Background & Rationale


As part of ensuring the effective implementation and roll-out of UNICEF’s organization-wide Gender Action Plan (GAP) 2014-2017 and the achievement of gender equality results, UNICEF is seeking a research and knowledge management consultant who can consolidate country, regional and global documents, data, and reporting so as to facilitate exchange within the section and its key internal and external networks. The consultant will also finalize the South Africa Country Office Gender programmatic review within the new business model for Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland and South Africa (BNLSS).


Purpose


The purpose of this contract is to accelerate the development, consolidation and utilization of knowledge, learning, data, and reporting on gender related work across UNICEF and its partners.


Expected results and deliverables


  1. Coordinate the development and consolidation of relevant materials for key upcoming events and meetings, including:

a) consolidation and distribution of research and advocacy materials for the SDG Summit


b) assistance in the development, posting, and sharing of key materials across the range of stakeholders for the International Day of the Girl Child


c) assistance in the development of the agenda and materials for the Global Gender Network meeting, and in consolidating the meeting report, its dissemination and follow-up


d) development and consolidation of materials for the GAP Steering Committee meeting


  1. Finalize and disseminate to Regional Office’s (RO) and Country Office’s (CO) and within HQ key strategic and guidance documents on the programmatic implementation of the GAP, including

a) the dissemination processes including webinars, postings, and virtual meetings for rolling out guidance materials


b) the finalization, posting and dissemination of the Gender mainstreaming paper and the Targeted Priorities game plans.


c) Dissemination and piloting of gender review toolkit


  1. Complete the reorganization of Gender Section documents as appropriate within a shared drive, the Gender Teamsite and the OneDrive and support Gender Section staff, Regional Gender Advisers and other extended network members in making effective collaborative use of these platforms.

  2. Strengthen processes for tracking country-level performance on the GAP, including reviewing key RO/CO documents to assess how GAP indicators are currently tracked at the CO/RO levels and developing a master list of GAP results

  3. Work with UNICEF NYHQ, ROs and COs to give more visibility to gender data and finalize country-level gender profiles

  4. Finalize of the SACO gender review in consultation with key SACO programme staff

a) Planning of SACO workshop and compilation of finalized recommendations and report on strengthened gender programming within the new business model for BNLSS (Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland and South Africa)


Duty Station


The consultant will be based in UNICEF HQ located in New York.


Timeframe:6 months


Start date: 24 August 2015 End date:1 March 2015


Key competences, technical background, and experience required


· Advanced university degree in social sciences, gender studies, international development/relations, and/or related fields.


  • 3-5 years of professional (mid-level) experience in international development related to gender equality

  • Experience in developing and sharing programmatic and research materials and knowledge management platforms and tools.

  • Strong organizational and coordination skills.

  • Experience within indicators, data, research and reporting.

  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure

  • Excellent ability to clearly and concisely express ideas and concepts in written and oral form.

  • Strong team player able to work effectively within large and diverse teams

  • Familiarity with UNICEF systems, Office 365, and SharePoint
