Recreation Specialist I - City of Aspen & Pitkin County, CO - Aspen, CO

Hiring Range: $16.37 – $18.70

Salary Range: $16.37 – $23.00

Position Summary: This position performs a variety of administrative, service, maintenance, and customer service duties to aid in the operations of the Parks & Recreation Department.


Supervision Exercised and Received: Reporting relations are dependent on the division of the departments worked. This position will be supervised by Recreation Supervisors.


Job Responsibility/Frequency/Tasks:
Essential Functions:
Aquatics


Responsible for ensuring the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies in and around the pool areas and the proper operation of pool equipment.

Assures proper conduct and work performance of all aquatic facility patrons to prevent unsafe practices and accidents; strictly enforces rules, policies and regulations governing lifeguard conduct and safety for the benefit of patron safety.

Handle emergency situations, using the proper American Red Cross training, enacting the City of Aspen Aquatic Emergency Action Plan, and appropriate follow-up procedures for all incidents.

Teaches group swim lessons.

Uphold communication with direct supervisors and staff.

Participate in scheduled in-service training sessions.

Performs rescues, administer first aid, perform CPR, and summon supervisors and emergency personnel as required for injuries or other medical emergencies. Guest Service


Greets and assists visitors.

Receives, screens and dispatches telephone calls.

Provides information to customers by telephone, e-mail, facsimile and correspondence.

Responsible for collecting and organizing customer surveys.

Efficiently provides information to patrons regarding appropriate program content and registration processes. This may include the Red Brick Recreation Center, and Ice Garden as well as the Aspen Recreation Center.

Operations and Maintenance


May be involved with the opening & closing of the building.

Cleaning and upkeep of facility as required.

Maintains and operates equipment and machinery.

Performs other operations for building upkeep as required and assigned.

Climbing Tower/ Batting Cages


May be responsible for the safe operation and handling of patrons as a climbing tower attendant or batting cage attendant. Knowledge

Customer Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.


English Language — Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Safety and Security — Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to ensure safety of all.

Minimum Requirements to be Considered for this position:
Minimum Requirements:
Education : High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

Experience : One (1) years of recreation or teaching experience.

Computer Skills : Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and Email.


License(s) & Certification(s) :
Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date. Must be 15 years old to comply with the American Red Cross Lifeguard training prerequisite.

Must possess current Red Cross training with Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR Certification for the professional rescuer or ability to obtain within six months from date of hire. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors Certification required.

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.


Desirable Qualities : Ability to speak Spanish and one year of customer support services experience.


NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a Criminal Background Check.


Work Hours and Environment, Physical Requirements, and Additional Information:


Work Hours


40 hour work week: Hours and schedule will vary depending on programs and events. Days and hours will change regularly. Must be able to work flexible hours.

Evenings/Weekends/Holidays: May be required depending on staffing needs.

Work Environment


Indoors: Standard office environment as well as in a modern recreation facility (pools, ice rinks, weight rooms, etc.)

Outdoors/Off-site: Meetings, special events, and trainings.

Lifting & Carrying: Frequently (weekly) up to 25 lbs.

Physical: Reaching, standing, skating, walking, sitting, typing, talking, crouching, kneeling, seeing, and hearing are all required. Near vision. Requires water activities in chlorinated water, cold conditions, slippery conditions and varying temperatures.

Ability to swim, tread water, perform rescues involving the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force to move objects and perform retrieval of heavy items.
