Fish Management Technician - State of Ohio - Guernsey County, OH

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS FOR A PROFICIENCY TEST FOR FISH MANAGEMENT TECHNICIAN

Applicants determined to meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take a written proficiency test administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources on Friday October 17 in Athens, Ohio.

The Division of Wildlife has primary functions, which include wildlife management and research, fish management and research, information, education, and law enforcement. Special emphasis is placed on endangered species, wetlands, and other critical habitats, and wildlife diversity. The division has five wildlife districts, four fish and wildlife research stations, two Lake Erie offices, six fish hatcheries, three visitors’ centers, and more than 170,000 acres of wildlife area.

BELOW IS A DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Conducts fish & limnological surveys (day &/or night): operates sampling equipment (e.g., watercraft, fyke, trap, gill, hoop & trammel nets, seines, trawls, plankton nets, bottom dredges, oxygen/temperature meters, conductivity meters, electrofishing equipment, water chemistry test kits); collects data on fish species distribution, abundance, age/growth, food habits, length, weight, spawning, angler harvest, habitat, ichthyo & zooplankton, macro invertebrates, aquatic vegetation & water chemistry; uses general laboratory equipment(e.g., microscopes, digital scales, Eberbach scale reader); identifies biological organisms using microscopes & keys; compiles, analyzes & reports data using scale reading equipment, calculators & available computer technology; applies fertilizer, aquatic herbicide & ichthyocides as directed by certified pesticide applicator; develops & improves sampling techniques & equipment; transports & stocks fish; constructs & installs fish concentration devices & erosion control structures; collects fish &/or gametes for hatchery production, operates state vehicle to drive from area to area of the state to perform job duties (e.g., travel to work locations, attend meetings, conferences, & events).

Monitors & performs maintenance & repair at unit headquarters & other access sites as assigned (e.g., mows & trims grass, cleans latrines, collects trash, erects & paints area signs, replaces parking lot posts); maintains buildings (e.g., interior and exterior repairs, custodial duties), vehicles, watercraft & sampling equipment; operates tractors, mowers, chainsaws, power & hand tools & electrical testing equipment; operates pickup truck, automobile, ATV & watercraft to get from one location to another.

Provides general information to the public; responds to routine public inquiries (e.g., via telephone, e-mail, US mail, in person); represents section/division at meetings, conferences, & seminars; prepares & delivers presentations to sportsmen's & civic groups; attends meetings, conferences & in-service training; works at public information displays & field days; assists wildlife management, law enforcement sections, & other agencies as assigned (e.g., fish kills, state fair, goose banding).

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of associate core program in fisheries science to include 1 course in chemistry; valid driver's license.

-Or 24 mos. exp. conducting fish management surveys, data collection, operating fish sampling equipment & implementing fish management strategies; valid driver's license.

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Major Worker Characteristics:

Knowledge of: inventory control, safety practices (Occupational Safety & Health Administration [OSHA] rules & regulations, Material Safety Data Sheets [MSDS], chemical application (e.g., herbicide, pesticide), working around water, watercraft, equipment operation), agency policies & procedures (department, division)*, government structure & process (local, state, federal), (20) natural sciences (biology, zoology, chemistry, fish management, fisheries science, limnology, fish management, aquatic biology, aquatic zoology), electronic data processing (use of relational databases & statistical software packages, Geographic Information System [GIS]).

Skilled in: Word Processing (Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, OR8), equipment operation (personal computer, general office equipment, laptop, projector, fish survey & limnological equipment (e.g. electrofishing boats, nets, water chemistry and temperature meters, Secchi disk ), watercraft, scale & reader, microscope, hand & power tools, electrical testing equipment, vehicle watercraft, automobile, pickup truck, all-terrain vehicles [ATV], electrical testing equipment, hand & power tools, mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, tractors) .

Ability to: define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions; calculate fractions, decimals & percentages; maintain accurate records; use proper research methods in gathering data; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; cooperate with co-workers on group projects; demonstrate strength to lift up to 50 lbs (e.g., equipment, bags of fertilizer, nets, fish stocking tanks, generators, small boats, trash, paint cans, heavy posts, prepare & deliver speeches before specialized audiences & general public; handle sensitive inquiries from & contact with officials & general public.

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Works outside; exposed to inclement weather; may be required to work evenings & weekends.
