About the Position:
This is a developmental position. Work is closely controlled & subject to routine review. Assignments are accompanied by clear, detailed, specific instructions. Dental assistants at this level are not permitted to take radiographs/x-rays without direct supervision, however they will be required to satisfactorily complete all requirements for radiographer certification that meets or exceeds the standards described in 42 CFR Part 75.
You may be required to undergo periodic Tuberculin tine & Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) testing along with the mandatory drug testing required of this Testing Designated Position. This position involves long periods of standing & walking. The work involves danger of exposure to communicable diseases, and to cuts & burns in handling instruments. Assistant may use surgical mask & eyeglasses during treatments to protect against flying debris.

As a dental assistant in a trainee capacity you will provide assistance in one or more phases of restorative, prosthodontic, oral surgical, endodontic, or periodontal treatment as provided in general dentistry.
Duties will include receiving & scheduling patients, recording patient medical history, charting examination & treatment information, & recording prescription information.
You will sterilize instruments, materials and equipment, prepare surgical trays, maintain dental equipment, properly store & maintain adequate levels of supplies, prepare & arrange all instruments and materials needed for each treatment, prepare patient and operatory, operate dental x-ray equipment to take intra & extra-oral radiographs, retrieve digital images and/or develop & finish film, take blood pressure & assist dentist at chairside by passing instruments & materials & keeping area of operation clear using high speed evacuator, suction tip & irrigation.

General Schedule
NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as dental radiographers.
BASIC EXPERIENCE: GS-3 Applicants must have six months of general experience.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: (1) Work that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject are of the occupation. Candidates for this position must clearly demonstrate in their resume they possess general work experience which may involve record keeping, maintaining dental equipment, passing dental instruments, preparing dental trays, taking & processing radiographs, and/or chairside assisting.
EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Made in accordance with OPM Operating Manual Qualifications Standards for General Schedule Positions, for GS-3: One year above high school with course(s) related to the occupation.
