Major Functions
Supervise lead staff in the following units/areas: Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Ally Programs Office; Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence; Women's Center; North Star STEM Alliance (NSF Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation grant); external relations; and retention initiatives.Administer and provide oversight for a number of OED scholarship programs.Serve as initial point of contact for student issues that come to OED.Work with OED and University partners in developing or enhancing policies and programming that meet the needs of a diverse student body.Work with the Vice President to establish and nurture relationships across the University of Minnesota system, with primary responsibility for the office's relationships with the Crookston, Duluth, Morris, and Rochester campuses.Provide leadership and oversight for the planning and designing of programs, services and initiatives that meet the needs of various communities, both internally and externally.Work with the Vice President to establish and nurture external relationships throughout the State of Minnesota, including developing respectful relationships with Minnesota Tribal Nations.In conjunction with other OED senior staff, work and meet regularly with staff across the system with responsibility for local diversity efforts.Work with the Vice President and OED leadership to explore diversity accountability measures for use across the University system, and other areas as needed.Administer and provide oversight for the University's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute.Work with the Vice President to assess future resource allocations and needs to achieve institutional diversity goals.Work with the Vice President and other OED senior staff on implementing the University's Equity and Diversity Vision Framework.Work with the Vice President to identify external development and fundraising opportunities to support the work of the unit.Serve as a representative of the Vice President at meetings and other functions when appropriate.Program/Unit DescriptionThe Office for Equity and Diversity (OED) is responsible for the University of Minnesota's system-wide equity and diversity initiatives and programs, and for infusing the core values of equity and diversity into all aspects of teaching, learning, research, service, and outreach at the University. OED includes the following units housed on the University's Twin Cities campus: Business and Community Economic Development; the Office for Conflict Resolution; Disability Services; the Office for Diversity in Graduate Education; the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action; the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Ally Programs Office; the Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence; and the Women's Center.
The Assistant Vice President for Equity and Diversity reports to and works closely with the Vice President to engage all of the U of M campuses in the work of implementing the University's Equity and Diversity Vision Framework. This position provides leadership and oversight for the planning and designing of programs, services and initiatives that support student access and success and work to meet the needs of various communities?internally and externally.

As an integral member of the Vice President's senior executive team, the Assistant Vice President is involved in long-term planning of the office, policy development, and determining new strategies and initiatives to move forward the Office's and University's equity and diversity agenda. The position requires a high degree of independent judgment and discretionary authority that will significantly impact system-side University policies and practices. This appointee is expected to act on behalf of the Vice President in many areas.
