Vidant Medical Center is a fully accredited, 900+ bed regional referral facility encompassing a Level-1 Trauma Center and extensive inpatient and outpatient services including intensive and intermediate care, pediatrics, bariatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology, surgery, pain management and psychiatry.


Responsibilities


  • Communicates effectively with staff, patients, and families through demonstration of excellent customer service skills, through appropriate telephone courtesy and manners.

  • Excellent Customer service skills include but are not limited to: solving customers problems, treats customers with respect and dignity; Acknowledging and responding quickly to customers’ needs; Using appropriate greeting and content to address patients, family members, and staff both on the phone and during patient visitations; Answering questions within their scope of practice; The use two patient identifiers must be used at all times to identify accuracy of patients’ meal orders.

  • Performs all functions in Health Touch to ensure that the following are correct: patient diet order, food allergies,nourishments, enteral products, and preferences. Compares SMS Diet Office to diet orders in Health Touch when on duty in the AM. Input Food and Drug information.

  • Responds and cooperate with changes in workload. Performs all work in a safe and sanitary manner. Maintains all workstations in a neat and organized manner.

  • Requires active participation in continuous quality improvement activities supports and participates in performance improvements activities, including but not limited to tray assessments, meal rounds, and hospital/department committees.

  • Maintains and correctly files information for the call center.

  • Records all patient related information on the phone message log, completing all sections of the log with necessary information.

  • Counts and records diet census information and tube feeding information daily; Tallies late trays and total trays served per meal; generates tally report and distributes to food production area.

  • Has an overall understanding of competencies and food permitted on therapeutic diets.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and process correct diets and portions for all age groups from pediatrics through elderly adults; Demonstrates age appropriate communication skills for the patient population served.

  • Process AYR customer orders, including patient/family initiated orders and those patients needing assistance. Assist patients with telephone call backs or personal visitation as needed while ensuring adherence to all diet orders, determine which patients have not placed an order for that meal period, and initiate telephone or personal contact as appropriate.

  • Take phone calls and fax orders for all food requests. Receive requests for diet changes via computer, fax; or written format during downtime. Make necessary diet changes, keep “Enter/Edit” computer screen and Room Service order system updated. Follow standard procedures for diet patterns.

  • Coordinate processing of AM and PM nourishment orders and print AM and PM nourishment labels. Process orders for patient requested nourishments. Coordinate delivery of all tube feeding and oral supplement orders.

  • Involved with training of other staff members, dietetic interns, and other department personnel concerning day to day functions in the Food and Nutrition department.

  • Complete other tasks throughout the department as needed.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Related experience or education demonstrating knowledge of normal and modified diets and the Carbohydrate Counting and Protein Exchange Systems is required.

  • Must be able to read, write and speak English (Bilingual in Spanish is encouraged)

  • Nutrition education background or previous hospital food service, diet office, of clerical experience preferred.

  • 1 to 3 years work experience is required.
