United States of America: Program Assistant: Middle East and North Africa


Summary:
NDI’s Middle East and North Africa team seeks a Program Assistant to support NDI’s democratic development programs in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The Program Assistant will work with members of the MENA team to assist in the management, planning, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of democracy support programs with political parties, civic organizations and government entities. The position will be based in Washington, DC, and may require occasional travel overseas.


In an effort to assist countries in MENA develop and sustain democratic forms of governance, NDI conducts programs throughout the region to support electoral processes, strengthen political parties, increase citizen involvement in political processes and build governing capacity at the local and national levels. The Institute also conducts activities to promote the political participation of women, youth and other marginalized sectors of society.


Primary Responsibilities:



  • Under close supervision of a program officer, senior program manager or other individuals in authority within the team, provides administrative and logistical support.




  • Under close supervision and direction, contributes to writing and reporting of various documents specific to the team and/or region such as quarterly progress reports, proposals, workplans, and political updates.




  • Under close supervision, creates initial drafts of budgets; and monitors program budgets.




  • Participates in program support and conducts research on programs.




  • Trains and supervises interns on tasks.




  • Provides administrative support for proposal production and work plan formulation; takes part in strategic and work plan discussions.




  • Attends internal meetings and external events to keep up to date on the latest information on team, region, or partners.



Required Skills/Experience:



  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Public policy, Public Administration, International Relations, Political Science or a related field; graduate degree preferred. Demonstrated coursework and/or internships in project management, nonprofit administration, international development, community organizing, political campaigning, legislative affairs or related subject.




  • Experience living/working/traveling overseas preferred but not required.




  • Good interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of staff, U.S. and foreign government personnel and NGO community.




  • Good oral and written communication skills to effectively present information and respond to questions.




  • Capacity to work both independently and as a member of a team.




  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.




  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs.




  • Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired.




  • Working knowledge of basic budget and accounting procedures.




  • Ability and willingness to travel to regional locations, which are often remote and difficult to reach.




  • Interest in and knowledge of regional political environments and people.




  • Political analysis skills.




  • Arabic and/or French language proficiency preferred but not required.




  • Ability to effectively articulate NDI mission statements and program/project initiatives.




  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.




  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.




  • Ability to apply discretion and maintain confidential information.
