Job Description Summary
Dispatcher (I) perform a full range of telephone operational duties in a 24-hour facility:
Receives and records emergency and routine business calls; process and prioritize incoming calls for police, fire, and EMS assistance.
Responsible for answering all incoming phone lines including all 9-1-1 lines; provides support requests for Police and Fire, and EMS personnel; provides Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) protocols to citizens requiring medical assistance.
Other Requirements: A valid Texas driver’s license with a driving record that meets City guidelines; Willingness and/or ability to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends; work on an on-call basis, work overtime, work irregular duty assignments, work under undesirable and hazardous conditions; Conform to department grooming standards; Successfully pass a personal background investigation, medical physical, drug screen and oral interview; Work alone; Attend educational sessions as required; travel out of town for one day or more; Maintains proficiency and training requirements of a Telecommunications Operator; Regular attendance at work and arrives on time; Ability to get along with other employees and the public.

MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING: Typing test with score of 30 wpm with 7 or less errors.

Job Duties
Answer and routes routine incoming telephone calls to various departments when applicable.
Provides information and assistance to the public.
Receives, records, prioritizes, incoming calls for Police, Fire, and EMS and inputs data via Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
Proficiency with Emergency Medical Dispatch protocols and effective communications with the caller to help others, save lives, and reduce disability.
Answer all routine, TDD/TTY, and E-9-1-1 in courteous and professional manner calls and respond appropriately.
Responsible for the accuracy of call types; the contact location, and prioritizing the urgency of each call.
Provides support service and updates as needed, i.e., street indexes, data entry, on call personnel list, map and flip chart, and other pertinent information.
All other duties as assigned.
Education, Training, and Experience
High school diploma or G.E.D. certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions; accurate typing skills; create a positive attitude toward the department. Ability to maintain consistent composure. Ability to speak clearly, calmly and authoritatively to persons who may be rude, confused or frightened; effective telephone skills. Ability to get along with other employees and the public; Ability to work with dispatch equipment and communicate with citizens and emergency personnel in highly stressful, possibly emergency situations. Ability to works with geographic information system & other current and developing technologies related to public safety communications; Ability to speak calmly and authoritatively to persons who may be rude, confused or frightened; Ability to use effective telephone skills.
Skills: Be able to type 30 wpm with 7 or less errors.
