This is responsible professional library work that focuses on library services for teens. The work entails significant involvement with library wide youth services teams and initiatives as well as community partnerships and collaborations. The position also functions within the context of a branch library that provides a range of public library services to all ages.
Employees may be assigned to a variety of library programs, services and functions necessitating judgment and discretion in their development and implementation. Employees may lead and/or coordinate subordinates as assigned. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian 3 or Library Supervisor. This series is structured to provide advancement from Librarian 1 to Librarian 2 (consistent with bargaining agreement provisions).
Librarian 1
This is the entry level of the professional librarian career progression series. This work is initially characterized by more structured assignments, and/or is more closely reviewed, until the employee gains requisite operational skills and program familiarity.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Design, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate programs and services that creatively merge the needs and interests of teens with public library assets. Meet informational and recreational needs of teens through the development of collections. Demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of literature for and about teens in traditional and emerging formats. Evaluate collections and exercise professional judgment in recommending and/or purchasing library materials; and/or in removing outdated or unwanted materials. Provide a variety of informational and recreational services to meet the diverse needs and interests of teens. Identify trends and pop-culture interests of teens to inform collection and programming initiatives. Develop a collection that consists of a broad range of materials, at varied interest and reading skill levels, encompassing appropriate formats that reflect current and emerging technologies. Organize physical and virtual collections to maximize ease of use, appeal and independent access for teens. Analyze collection/customer usage data to maintain awareness of collection relevance to customer needs, and recommend changes as appropriate. Utilize the automated acquisition module for ordering and record keeping. Oversee acquisitions budgets for assigned collections.
Assist in assessing programming needs and in developing programs. Develop, promote and present traditional and informal library programming for children and young teens, and for adults interested in children. Engage teens in planning and implementing services and programs for their age group, to include development of a structure for teens who wish to assist in a variety of roles as library volunteers. Instruct teens in basic information gathering, research skills and information literacy skills, including those necessary to evaluate and utilize electronic information resources. Maintain awareness and fluency regarding technology, new platforms, personal electronic devices, etc.
Develop relationships and partnerships with teens, youth-serving professionals and/or collaborative library, community and government agencies and organizations. Design, coordinate and perform outreach activities to schools and community centers, etc. to promote use of library resources and meet the community’s needs for services. Help to identify and respond to the service area community needs. Work to identify unserved or under served persons in the service area community. Assist in conducting focus groups and customer needs assessments and strategic planning. Provide for related effective communication at all levels. Advocate for teens in the library and in the community. Create and maintain partnerships with local community centers, neighborhood centers and schools to promote teen programming and literacy. Conduct tours and orientation for teen library visitors. Market teen library services through a variety of means and media and evaluate effectiveness. Serve as a knowledgeable resource for the school community as well as for parents and caregivers of teens.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of library science theories, principles, practices, and terminology applicable to a public library. Working knowledge of automated and manual library systems. Working knowledge of professional library reference and collection development strategies and resources. Working knowledge of and ability to use computer software applicable to the duties of the position. Knowledge of the principles and practices of library services for children and teens. Knowledge of literature and curriculum relevant to teens and constantly evolving trends and pop culture interests of teens. Knowledge of teen growth and development. Knowledge of relevant social media, online databases and office productivity tools. Ability to provide professional expertise in the development, promotion and implementation of library programs and services. Ability to design, implement and evaluate marketing for the teen audience. Ability to model exceptional customer service skills, including exhibiting respect and sensitivity to a diverse clientele. Ability to work effectively with diverse and/or underserved individuals and communities in traditional and non-traditional settings. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to skillfully make presentations. Ability to maintain a positive and flexible approach to changing needs within the community and to a changing information environment. Ability to learn and apply the latest trends in technology and teen library services. Ability to coordinate library program activities and staff within prescribed parameters. Ability to creatively plan, promote, carry out and evaluate programs; participate in the promotion, development and organization of teen collections in relevant formats. Ability to be an advocate for teens; perform as a leader and as a collaborative team member. Ability to conduct studies and analyze data; apply research and professional reading to practice; instruct teens and others in information gathering and synthesis. Ability to maintain a flexible approach to assignments and schedules; exercise sound judgment and discretion in making choices on the spot, if needed. Ability to maintain adequate attendance.
Physical strength, dexterity and acuity in locating, lifting and shelving library materials (of varying formats and weights).
Training and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited library school with a master's degree in library or information science. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.
Special Requirements:
Ability to meet the transportation requirments of the position.
Physical Requirements:
Employees in this position must be able to lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds (equivalent to a bucket of books) and must be capable of pushing wheeled carts of books and other materials weighing up to 200 pounds onto and off elevators and across carpeted areas. In addition, they must be able to frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, reach overhead, and repeatedly lift books weighing as much as three pounds.
