BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS WKR  job - State of Minnesota - Itasca State Park, MN

Building and Grounds Worker positions perform a variety of tasks involved in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of buildings, grounds, equipment, and facilities.

*Building and facility maintenance and repair: clean floors, walls, windows, bathroom facilities, fixtures; dispose of waste materials; paint structures; repair or replace window screens, doors, locks, roofs, and fixtures; repair or replace broken or leaking water pipes; minor electrical, heating, and plumbing repairs; seasonally activate and deactivate water systems; beach maintenance.

*Grounds maintenance: mow and trim grass; carry out weed control program; plant and trim trees and shrubs; remove trees and stumps; dispose of waste materials; road repairs; develop, maintain, and groom trails; repair, conduct tests, and prepare reports on water and sewer systems; paint and repair picnic tables, signs, posts, fences; remove snow from roads and walkways; assist with resource management projects such as prescribed burns, noxious weed control, reforestation, and seed collection.

*Equipment inspection and maintenance: routine maintenance and minor repairs on small engines, vehicles, hand and small power tools, and other equipment and tools; complete reports and forms on use and repairs.

*Security: routine patrol; enforce rules and regulations; maintain security log; provide severe weather warnings.

*Contact station/Nature Store operation: greet park visitors and disperse information on the park, park rules and regulations, and other local attractions; sell vehicle permits and register campers; sell and rent various products; maintain daily records of revenue collected; answer phones and radio messages.


Minimum Qualifications:


This is a part time seasonal Building and Grounds Worker position at Itasca State Park near Park Rapids, Minnesota. Hours and days of work will vary and may include weekends, evenings and holidays. Anticipated season dates are May 6 through October 14.


Ability to operate equipment such as motor vehicle, tractor, heavy equipment, snowmobile, snow blower, ATV, chain saw, tree planter, stump remover, lawn mower, small hand tools and other equipment and tools.


*Ability to work with cleaning chemicals such as ammonia, bleaches, scouring agents and soaps sufficient to appropriately select agent(s), handle and apply, and dispose of safely.


Ability to read and comprehend instructions on labels, instruction manuals, etc.


Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50-pound bags of feed maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Requires a Class D Driver’s License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver’s license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.


Preferred Qualifications:


Ability to operate a phone, two way radio, computer and other office equipment.

Experience performing routine maintenance and repair of small engines, vehicles, and other equipment and tools.

Ability to effectively communicate with the public and other employees.

Ability to provide written information and instructions to the public and other employees.

Arithmetic skills sufficient to accurately collect money from the public for various fees.

Knowledge of park rules, policies and facilities.

Record keeping skills

Computer skills

Experience in construction trades.

Security experience and training.

First Aid and CPR training.

Wastewater Operator Class D License.
