Position Summary
The Senior Program Associate will provide programmatic support, including research, writing, proposal design, program evaluation, finance, logistical, and administrative assistance to the Latin America program. He/she will work collaboratively with the DC-based Latin America staff, as well as its field staff and in-country partners, and be given meaningful opportunities to add value to its initiatives and projects. He/she will demonstrate knowledge of regional human rights challenges and possess relevant academic and professional experience. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Regional Director for Latin America and Caribbean Programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors’ degree in Political Science, International Relations, Latin America studies, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- 2-4 years of relevant professional experience
- Fluency in oral and written Spanish is required
- Experience working on human rights or democracy-related issues in Latin America is preferred
- Experience managing grants, including USG funding, is preferred
- Experience living, volunteering, working, or studying in Latin America strongly preferred
- Experience implementing or managing projects in challenging country contexts is preferred
- Excellent research, writing, critical thinking, and organizational skills
- Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
- Knowledge of regional human rights principles and mechanisms and sound understanding of democracy promotion, with a focus on Latin America
- Mastery of MS Office Suite, with experience developing and managing budgets in Excel
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles and grant-related compliance requirements preferred
- Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times
- Ability to successfully work in a diverse and multicultural environment
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team
- Strong ability to prioritize work and multi task to meet tight deadlines in a fast paced environment
- Ability to apply superb attention to detail and consistently produce timely and error-free work
- Flexible and adaptable with a good sense of humor and positive attitude
- Ability to travel to event sites and field offices less than 15% of the time
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide programmatic, logistical, and administrative support to field staff and in-country partners on a daily basis
- Draft press releases, briefings, quarterly project reports, and project proposals
- Assist with developing and implementing advocacy strategies for the region, including organizing events and meetings and communicating with external contacts as requested
- Assist with outreach to other organizations and partners for collaboration
- Participate in meetings with donors on a regular basis
- Represent team in external meetings and backstopping calls
- Conduct desk research for assessments, proposals, budget narratives, news updates, press statements, events, etc.
- Track and update program expenditures on a daily basis
- Draft contracts, MOUs, letters of agreement and other contractual documents for partners and vendors
- Prepare and review expense reports and payment requests in compliance with FH and donor requirements
- Arrange international travel
- Other related duties as assigned.
