Description:
We are seeking a scientist with knowledge of behavioral science theories and training in behavior change. The scientist will work with multidisciplinary teams on strategic behavior change communication projects, providing guidance on research, monitoring and evaluation strategies. The ideal candidate will also be expected to initiate, direct, and execute new scientific research and/or develop strategies in research studies or program interventions, and provide research-support services. The latter may include planning and executing research methods training, designing training materials for research studies. As an FHI 360 scientist, the individual is expected to make major contributions to the scientific literature, present at conferences, and serve as an internal consultant for other FHI 360 divisions and departments.
Job Summary / Responsibilities:
- Develops scientifically appropriate approaches to answering a variety of research questions, in particular those related to the use of health communication strategies to address sexual and reproductive health issues and/or integrated health issues both domestically and globally.
- Leads and/or collaborates on proposals for new funding opportunities.
- Ensures that research is compliant with FHI 360, donor/sponsor, and IRB policies and procedures.
- Works with staff in other divisions and in the field in a highly collaborative manner to identify and prepare research protocols and M&E approaches.
- Provides scientific support with implementing research studies.
- Drafts, edits, reviews and presents analysis of research findings and reports for publication and training materials.
- Provides in-house review of protocols, papers, research strategies and proposals for funding projects for methodological and technological soundness.
- Collaborates with higher level scientists on various research materials, statistical results, and medical/clinical agendas.
Applied Knowledge & Skills:
- Comprehensive knowledge of behavior change theories, concepts and practices used in intervention development and evaluation.
- Excellent quantitative/qualitative and analytical skills. Some relevant skills include:
- Training in scale development for social science research
- Familiarity with design, implementation and monitoring of digital health interventions
- Familiarity with using mobile and digital technologies for data collection, monitoring and evaluation, and/or research
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proven track record in collaborating with colleagues from a range of different cultural backgrounds and disciplines.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data, identify errors and provide corrective action.
- Demonstrates technical skills, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.
- Works on problems that are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of factors or situation.
- Exercises judgment, knowledge, skills, general precedents and practices to determine appropriate action.
- Decisions have major impact on the management and operations of an area within a department.
- Provides suggestions to strategic, operational and business decisions that affect the division.
- Builds working relationships internally and externally with other scientists, program implementers and scientific community.
- May supervise 1-3 research assistants or research associates.
- Reports to the Director.
Qualifications:
- Doctorate Degree or its International Equivalent in Public Health, Communications, Behavioral Science or related fields (Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology) Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience sufficient to successfully perform the key responsibilities of the job.
- Typically requires 5+ years of experience with scientific disciplines developing strategies in research studies and scientific projects.
- Articulate, professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner with clients and staff.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English. Competency in French desirable.
- Proven track record in proposal development including individually-initiated and team-based proposals.
- Prior work experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO) or in work-related academic, governmental, or industry setting.
Technology to be Used: Qualitative and quantitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo or Atlas Ti; SAS, STATA, SPSS, M+ or other); use of PDAs and/or tablets for program intervention and/or data collection
Travel Requirements: 10%-25%
