PM Mechanic I - Facilities job - TUFTS University - Grafton, MA

The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the efficient and cost effective operations, maintenance and management of all Tufts university facilities consisting of approximately 5 million square feet of space on three campuses (Somerville/Medford, Grafton, and Boston).

A broad range of services are provided to support the University campuses including: facility maintenance by all trades, capital maintenance, custodial services, energy and utilities systems, recycling and waste management, event services, residential facilities coordination and grounds maintenance.

Related functions, which require close coordination with this department, are public and environmental safety and security, campus planning, and design and construction of capital and deferred maintenance projects including major repairs, renovation and new construction.


The PM Mechanic I position must have extensive knowledge in the maintenance, installation and repair of various types of electro/mechanical equipment. Candidates must have had a minimum of experience/knowledge base in the mechanical preventive maintenance trade.


Under the direction of the Facilities Manager the PM Mechanic I will perform duties which may include, but are not limited to, the following:


• Preventive maintenance of all electrical systems (including some HVAC and plumbing).

• Ability to repair pumps, including centrifugal pump systems.

• Back-up all other tradespersons to respond to routine or emergency calls as designated by Facilities Manager and/or Director.

• Troubleshoot, inspect and repair some steam and hot water distribution systems and various controls.

• Troubleshoot, inspect and repair some heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems and components.

• Work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams and/or verbal instructions.

• Be able to submit application and receive permit for campus blanket Electrical Maintenance work.

• Comprehend and maintain equipment manuals and accurate repair records.

• The PM Mechanic will be asked to use hand and power tools, refrigeration and air conditioning gauges, meters and other similar measuring equipment associated with the trades.


Qualifications

Basic Requirements:


Must have had a minimum of knowledge/experience base in the electro-mechanical preventive maintenance trade with at least ten (10) years of professional experience in the facilities maintenance field. Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license. Must hold a current Massachusetts Electrician’s License. Must be able to read, write and comprehend the English language and have the ability to compute addition, subtraction, multiplication and division functions using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Have a strong working knowledge of electro-mechanical equipment, motors and circuitry. Proficient computer skills and a full working knowledge of controls systems. Ability to lift up to 80 lbs. with or without accommodation, working at various heights and in limited area crawl spaces and the ability to access all areas of the campus.


Preferred Qualifications:


Trade or vocational school is strongly preferred. Hoisting, wastewater operator and/or fireman licenses also beneficial.


Special Work Schedule Requirements:


Work may be required on roofs, in confined spaces, and/or during foul weather. Overtime may be necessary, as workload requires with/without advanced notice. Must be able to be on call.
