The Senior Associate will play a critical role in achieving these goals by working closely with the Vice President, Fish Forever, our partners at Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and Rare’s leadership team to plan and implement a wide-ranging program to create the enabling environment for Fish Forever around the world.

The Senior Associate, Fish Forever will contribute to the growth of one of Rare’s key programs. This role provides an exceptional opportunity to learn about both conservation program development and social enterprises for someone that thrives in a fast-paced work environment. You will be expected to design cross-functional work flows, make adjustments on the fly, and meet the needs of multiple stakeholders. Projects will range from high level strategic planning to internal, short-term fixes.


Essential Functions


We seek someone with an entrepreneurial spirit and an appetite for working in a cross-functional, fluid environment to help the organization grow and manage projects across departments and country teams. Initial responsibilities include:


  • Partner with the VP Fish Forever and Managing Director, Global Solutions to help identify improvements and innovations to refresh the current Fish Forever program strategy;

  • Manage technology consultants including Point 97 during the technology needs assessment for the Fish Forever program (e.g., mobile based tools for tracking fishermen, collecting data etc.) and based on results participate, as needed, in the development and execution of next steps;

  • Under the direction of the Vice President, Fish Forever and in coordination with Rare’s staff conduct program analysis on defining the relevant Fish Forever locations; and

  • Participate in research, analyses, writing and presentations on special projects as assigned.

Required Experience and Education


This position requires an individual with strong project management, writing, critical thinking and leadership skills associated with this position. The successful candidate will also be confident, self-motivated, and able to achieve results in a wide variety of circumstances.


  • A minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in program or project management with a proven track record in content development and strategic planning preferably within a conservation, international development environment or management consulting environment;

  • Exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving skills;

  • Strong written communication skills (writing, editing and proofreading);

  • and exceptional presentation skills;

  • Self-starter, able to achieve results with little supervision;

  • Comfort with ambiguity and change;

  • Diplomatic, flexible and able to adapt to new circumstances;

  • Marketing, communications or client relations experience a plus;

  • Spanish, Portuguese or Bahasa Indonesia language skills also a plus;

  • Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software; and

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA/other relevant Master’s degree preferred.
