CDOC - GED Teacher - Buena Vista - State of Colorado - Chaffee County, CO

The position provides General Education Development (GED) Instruction within an adult educational correctional system/facility by delivering instruction, training and assessments. Instruction is in accordance with the Colorado Department of Education approved Certificate of Accomplishment Curriculum for appropriate Adult Basic Education levels.

Job Duties include but are not limited to:
Teach and mentor offender students individually or in large and small group classrooms promoting academic performance skills;

Determine educational needs of offender students to develop short and long term goals;

Develop and implement competency-based teaching aids such as instructional software, multimedia visual aids, or study materials;

Lecture on theories, concepts and terminology;

Select and administer appropriate performance assessments to offender students in order to measure progress, course completion requirements, and to evaluate training/testing effectiveness;

Prepare reports and maintain records such as student grades, attendance rosters, and training activity details;

Observe and evaluate offender students’ work to determine progress, provide feedback, and make suggestions for improvement;

Document offender achievements, competencies and contact hours towards completion of certificate requirements;

Justify accuracy and usage of budget requests;

Participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field, and integrate relevant information into training programs;

Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with fellow teachers in a cooperative effort to promote mutual and continued guidance and improvements;

Actively contribute to the safety and security of the facility through effective offender management and promoting conflict resolution and solutions;

Endorse and adhere to the CDOC Mission and Vision promoting commitment and integrity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in an education related field.

Applicants must possess a current and valid Colorado Professional or Initial Teacher License. (A copy of your license MUST be scanned and uploaded to this application at the time your application is submitted.)

Individuals who possess a Colorado Initial License upon hire must obtain the Colorado Professional Teacher License within three (3) years of date of hire.


SUBSTITUTIONS:
A current and valid Colorado Literacy Instruction or Adult Basic Education Authorization (LIA/ABE) may substitute for the Colorado Professional or Initial Teacher License. There is no substitution for the required education. It is imperative that all credentials for this position be maintained.

  • Must be 21 years of age;

  • Possess a valid State of Colorado Driver’s License;

  • Successfully complete the Department of Corrections Basic Training upon hire, initial drug screening, and random drug screening throughout employment;

  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete PPCT (Pressure Point Control Tactics);

  • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

  • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

  • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;

  • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

  • Swing a baton in a striking technique;

  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

  • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

  • Positions that have direct contact with offenders may be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum;

  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breeches in safety and security;

  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;

  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;

  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;

  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;

  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders;

  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;

  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

  • Willing and able to travel;

  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;

  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.
