Description:


The Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance III Project (FANTA) improves nutrition and food security policy, strategy, and programming, and provides technical support to USAID and its partners, including host country governments, international organizations, and NGO implementing partners. Focus areas for technical assistance include maternal and child health and nutrition, HIV and other infectious diseases, community-based nutrition programs and interventions, and food security and livelihood strengthening. FANTA develops and adapts approaches to support the design and quality implementation of field programs, while building on field experience to improve and expand the evidence base, methods, and global standards for nutrition and food security programming. The project, funded by USAID, is a five-year cooperative agreement.


Job Summary / Responsibilities:


The Communications Director, FANTA III Project is responsible for the strategic planning and development of FANTA’s communications materials, publications, and outreach and dissemination. The Communications Director, FANTA III Project leads the FANTA Communications Unit that is responsible for editing, creating, and repurposing content for dissemination to many audiences, including USAID, FHI 360, policy makers, governments, and NGOs working in international development.


Essential Job Functions:


  • Lead, manage, and coordinate implementation of a comprehensive knowledge management and dissemination strategy in partnership with headquarter staff, country teams, technical and implementing partners, and FHI 360.

  • Lead the strategic planning of FANTA’s communications materials while ensuring high-quality publications and products, ensuring adherence to USAID branding guidelines, and repurposing materials to meet the needs of different audiences.

  • Oversee and contribute to activities conducted by the Communications Unit and consultants in the areas of writing and editing, graphic design, dissemination, website development and content management, social media, video, e-learning, and internal communications.

  • Oversee and support the development of clear systems, processes, and quality control for publication and material development and outreach/dissemination.

  • Supervise Communications Unit staff and oversee budget.

  • Oversee and contribute to dissemination of information through a variety of approaches, including publications, workshops, conferences, distance learning, and social media, as well as seek new innovative approaches to dissemination.

  • Oversee and contribute to development of materials for USAID reporting, including annual reports, work plans, and reporting related to project assessment and close-out.

  • Provide support to FANTA country programs for the development of in-country knowledge management and dissemination strategies and distill, capture, and package country program learnings.

  • Ensure strong coordination with FHI 360 Corporate Communications and knowledge management staff to ensure proper project representation and sharing of tools, approaches, and materials.

  • Respond to internal and external information requests, as needed.

  • Directly supervise 2-3 people and lead a 4-7 person communications team.

  • Perform other job-related activities as assigned.

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, nutrition, public health, and/or international development with an emphasis on information-related aspects; Master"s degree strongly preferred.

  • 10 years of relevant experience required, with at least 2 years of field-based experience in international development preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, writing, and oral presentation skills.

  • Excellent problem solving and program management skills.

  • Experience assessing knowledge sharing needs and identifying appropriate dissemination activities.

  • Experience overseeing website development and content management

  • Experience in the use of new and emerging technology.

  • Successful planning and management of events including webinars, meetings, conferences, and launches.

  • Demonstrated leadership in building and sustaining positive working relationships and with various internal and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated experience managing a team to complete objectives/activities on time and within budget while meeting high quality standards and maintaining composure under tight deadlines.

  • Fluent in English.

  • Ability to travel internationally (up to 15% time).

Applied Knowledge & Skills:


  • Understanding and application of communications and knowledge management principles, practices, tools, and techniques, in the areas of strategic planning, materials development, and dissemination

  • Knowledge of technical and programmatic nutrition and international development issues

  • Outstanding interpersonal communication and management skills

  • Proven record with strategy development and implementation

  • Strong writing, editing, creative, presentation, and analytical skills

  • Ability to manage a diversified portfolio involving many individuals and deadlines

  • Ability to write for various audiences using a variety of styles such as technical, journalistic, and web-based program summaries
