The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) within the Division of Communication comprises Web, Social Media and Multimedia teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, DSS draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability.
DSS seeks to hire a consultant (Digital Specialist – Social Media), to work in the Social Media team, responsible for creating and crafting compelling digital content which engages audiences in a dynamic, interactive and meaningful way and sparks conversations around issues related to UNICEF’s mandate. She/he will play a leading role in managing UNICEF’s global presence on a wide range of social media platforms and guiding digital editorial processes. They will lead on the creation and coordination of key social media campaigns and strategy development and support efforts on digital marketing, monitoring and analysis, and moderation of platforms. Working under the supervision of the Digital Community Manager in the close knit Social Media and Engagement team, the Digital Specialist – Social Media will be expected to regularly step up and drive projects, and will serve as one of UNICEF’s key representatives in its global digital outreach.

Responsibilities
- Create compelling social media content for digital platforms and systematically grow UNICEF’s digital community and deepen engagement across all platforms.
- Manage the creation of social media content for key campaigns and events, working with relevant colleagues in the section and in other departments.
- Actively participate in editorial meetings, helping guide digital editorial processes.
- Help develop and implement informed, cross-platform social media and digital marketing strategies and support management to make informed decisions regarding digital strategy.
- Co-lead the management of UNICEF’s presence on Instagram, driving increased growth and engagement.
- Lead on the day to day production and repurposing of country office content on emergencies, as well as creation of social media packs on this topic as needed.
- Monitor and moderate social media channels, flagging risk and opportunities to deepen engagement.
- Act as deputy for the team’s Moderation Roster, providing regular advisory support for other team members when needed.
- Cover key UNICEF and UN events by live tweeting from @UNICEFTalk account
- Work with the Digital Strategy Section’s M&E consultant to measure and report on social media efforts.
- Liaise and work with graphic designers and agencies as needed, to produce visuals, infographics and apps for digital campaigns.
- Manage the Faces of UNICEF Tumblr blog and lead on outreach to generate content from Country/Regional Offices.
- Lead on the #TeamUNICEF project for the team, coordinate with colleagues from Country Offices to get content for digital dissemination.
- Lead on the team’s relationship with the OneMinutesJr project with the One Minutes Foundation.
- Stay abreast of new social media sites, platforms and emerging technologies and work closely with the Knowledge Coordinator to ensure latest trends are being appropriately acted on.
- Keep track of efforts and activities of other UN agencies, nonprofits and competitors, identifying content to be shared on UNICEF’s platforms.
- Support other teams in HQ and offices worldwide on their day to day social media efforts.
- Train HQ, country and regional colleagues in digital best practice and create training materials and guidelines, as necessary.
- Participate in and represent the team at relevant conferences and events.
- Deputise for the Digital Community Manager as necessary when they are out of the office.
Qualifications or specialized knowledge/ experience required
- Experience in implementing social media strategies for non-profit organizations and/or private sector companies and tracking their success and analysing results is essential.
- 4+ years experience working on social media, digital marketing or editorial for an NGO, global company or publishing outlet.
- Proven skills in networking, strategic thinking, advocacy, negotiation and copy editing.
- Strong writing and communication skills and the aptitude to handle competing messages and priorities with multiple audiences, including experience in writing for the web.
- Experience in developing and implementing social media or digital marketing strategies.
- Proven ability to write flawless copy on tight deadlines.
- Proven copy editing skills.
- Adept at using a wide range of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Pinterest.
- Experience of blogging and knowledge of best practices.
- Knowledge of social media monitoring technology and can use social media measurement and listening tools such as Radian6, Gorkana, Social Bakers, Crowdbooster.
- Experience in reporting on quantitative and qualitative analytics.
- Proven ability to present and communicate new projects to a varied audience.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities within specified timeframes.
- Proven skills in communication, networking, strategic thinking, advocacy, negotiation, and ability to relate to a young audience.
- Strong awareness of social media communication behaviours in developing regions/countries.
- Proven ability to conceptualize, plan and execute ideas as well as transfer knowledge and skills.
- Project management experience/qualifications a plus. Experience of working with agencies also desirable.
- Understanding of digital fundraising strategies a plus.
- Experience of capacity building and training a plus.
- Awareness of best practices in user experience and design.
- Experience in working for the UN, UNICEF or with International NGOs or global organisations a plus.
- High command of English. Other languages such as Spanish, French and Arabic are a plus.
- Bachelor Degree, ideally in social science, international affairs, marketing or communication. Masters preferred but not essential.
