Background
A consultant is needed to support UNICEF in leading the coordination of strategy, management, partnerships, and logistics for events and communications related to the International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC) and to plan, prepare, and roll out the relevant materials, events, communications, and collaboration activities related to the Day.
The consultant will lead the development of the strategy and theme for the Day of the Girl. S/he will liaise with relevant internal and external stakeholders, help define their role and the collaboration required, and coordinate with senior management to ensure that the strategic approach and its roll out are aligned with corporate goals and priorities. S/he will coordinate the development and deployment of a range of communications activities and materials for IDGC-related events, including social media strategies and related content with compelling and relevant messaging.
Expected results and deliverables
1) Articulate a theme in the form of a concept note for the International Day of the Girl Child in line with UNICEF’s corporate advocacy and communications priorities for gender in the Post 2015 context, and in collaboration with key sister agencies within the UN and multiple civil society, government, and private sector partners.
2) Develop a Briefing Book for HQ Divisions, UNICEF country offices and National Committees capturing the key messaging, data, required inputs, and options for celebrating the IDGC along the lines of the above specified theme.
3) Develop and implement a project plan for celebrating the International Day of the Girl, specifying activities, partnerships, roles, responsibilities, material and financial resources.
a. Coordinate details of events planned and monitor tasks and timelines to ensure deadlines are met.
b. Manage and track project communications with internal and external partners, event sponsors, and UNICEF Senior Management.
c. Coordinate event logistics, including vendor contract management, registration and attendee tracking, and presentation and materials support
4) Conceptualize and plan social media and communications strategies for IDGC 2015, working closely with relevant Divisions within UNICEF HQ.
5) Produce high-quality effective communications materials for IDGC 2015, including but not limited to:
a. Social media materials and messaging
b. Promotional materials for distribution to internal and external audiences
c. Flyers and other event-specific materials
d. Partner and sponsor communications materials
6) Plan and coordinate communications activities regarding events planned in conjunction with IDGC 2015
Duty Station
The consultant will be based in UNICEF New York Headquarters
Timeframe
A total of 60-70 working days between 01 July 2015 and 15 October 2015 (*Dates will be adjusted to reflect the actual start date of the consultancy*)
Qualifications
Education:
· Advanced University degree in communication, journalism, or related fields.
· Strong project management skills and ability to work across functional areas
· At least 10 years of progressively responsible and relevant professional work experience at the senior-level in international development communication and outreach.
· Proven skills in communication, strategic thinking and ability to relate to traditional and social media.
· Strong ability to write and edit public outreach materials
· Strong leadership, diplomatic, and negotiation skills along with the ability to deliver results.
· Ability to express ideas and concepts clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
· Excellent understanding of UN systems and international development issues.
· Demonstrated success managing multiple projects and competing priorities
· Professional experience with content creation, social media and project management
· Knowledge of computer systems, including internet tools, office applications, and interactive digital media.
· Fluency in English, knowledge of another UN language a plus.
