This appointment is not to exceed 1 year (IF SELECTED FOR THIS POSITION, YOU MUST BE A STUDENT CURRENTLY ENROLLED OR ACCEPTED FOR ENROLLMENT AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT) . To be eligible for the Pathways Internship Program, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate seeking program on at least a half-time basis and in good academic standing (qualifying certificate programs are post-high school programs equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum).
- Enrollment must be with an accredited educational institution or state approved home-school. These may include high schools, colleges, universities, technical trade, vocational, or business schools, and state approved home school secondary and post-secondary programs.
- S electees will be required to sign a Pathway’s Participant agreement and must maintain status as a student in good standing throughout the duration of the appointment.

Works with other law enforcement personnel in investigating crimes,
accidents, interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects. Prepares appropriate reports and legal
documents. The incumbent has been
trained in and performs the tasks related to collecting, protecting, and
maintaining evidence. In conjunction with
other law enforcement personnel, the incumbent participates with Federal,
State, and local attorneys in preparation for and in conducting in-depth
criminal prosecutions, and is considered a member of the law enforcement team
for arrests and as a witness providing testimony in court proceedings.
Performs law enforcement throughout the park such as road patrols,
traffic enforcement, boundary integrity, hunting patrols, lake and waterway
patrols, backcountry and wilderness patrols, etc. Investigates motor vehicle
accidents and issues citations. Responds
to emergency calls and takes action necessary to preserve the peace, resolve
problems, protect visitors and resources, apprehend violators, and ensure
compliance with regulatory and administrative requirements. Gains compliance with laws and regulations by
using a variety of techniques extending from
verbal or written warnings through the issuance of citations, to custodial
arrests.
Monitors and inspects use of various resources, such as buildings, lands
and shoreline, including leased land, concessions, docks, roads, and contract
work performed. Advises adjacent
landowners, park users, special use permit holders, and/or lessees on problems
such as encroachment, violations of lease agreements, and noncompliance with
permits or licenses. Performs assigned
resource management and resource protection tasks
and duties supporting the mission of the park. Takes appropriate remedial action to correct
observed resource problems. For more
serious violations, recommends and participates with senior park rangers in the
development and implementation of plans to address the problem.

Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student at least half-time at a qualifying education institution in a degree or certificate seeking program.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Park Ranger (Protection). Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to the following: law enforcement or investigative work; emergency services (emergency medical, search and rescue, emergency dispatch, lifeguard); park guide or tour leader; resource management related to natural and cultural resources (museum technician, biological science technician, archeological technician, trail crew, etc.); fire management (wildland and/or structural); assist in the management, information dissemination, or the carrying out of programs in a park, conservation reserve or similar area (fee collection, entrance station, backcountry office, visitor use assistant, volunteer, visitor information desk, campground ranger).
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor’s degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field. Related course work are subjects such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled.
AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF QUALIFYING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience.

Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB)
Applicants are required to pass the
Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) prior to entering law enforcement
positions. The duties of this position require arduous physical exertion
involving walking, running, lifting, standing, use of firearms, and exposure to
inclement weather. The Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) is a fitness test
consisting of five different components: 1) agility run – measures the ability
to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press
- measures the upper body strength for one repetition; 3) 1.5 mile run –
measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach – measures the
flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition –
measures the body fat. Prior to appointment, applicants will be
tested in all five components, but only the agility run, bench press and 1.5
mile run will be measured for a passing score in the 25th percentile (age and
gender adjusted) of these components. These procedures will ensure
that law enforcement officers are capable of performing strenuous physical
training and law enforcement duties. Applicants shall be disqualified for
appointment if they fail to meet any physical requirements.
Probationary or seasonal employment is subject to termination for failure to
meet the 25th percentile in each of the identified components being measured.

Effective January 2015,
temporary, seasonal, and intermittent employees on appointments expected to
last at least 90 days, and expected to work a schedule of 130 hours or more a
calendar month, will be eligible to enroll in a Federal Employee Health Benefit
(FEHB) health plan upon notification from their employing office. Temporary,
seasonal, and intermittent employees for whom the expectation of hours of
employment changes to meet the above requirement would become eligible to

Physical demands: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring agility and dexterity.
Work environment: Duties require extended periods of outdoor work where the incumbent will be exposed to severe weather conditions including temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Investigation are conducted on foot, in four-wheel drive vehicles, or other forms of conveyance in remote backcountry settings. Emergency service and law enforcement work requires entry into hazardous environments, exposure to dangerous persons, animals, and substances, and potential exposure to infectious diseases.
