Youth Services Specialist - PT 15 hrs. - Linden Branch job - Columbus Metropolitan Library - Columbus, OH

PURPOSE OF JOB:
This position serves children and families in the children’s area, ensuring a positive customer experience by engaging in conversation and reading with children, connecting children with good books and promoting programs and services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Proactively greets children and families upon their arrival in the children’s area; engages children in conversations, learns names and promotes usage of the library collection and resources.


Supports Young Minds Strategy by connecting children with good books and with titles at child’s reading level.


Promotes reading and a love of books by reading with children individually or in small groups; encourages parents and caregivers to read and checkout books.


Shares early literacy skills and promotes good read alouds for kindergarten readiness with parents and caregivers.


Facilitates parent and child usage of Kindergarten Readiness areas including technology.


Encourages participation in youth services programs; explains programs to children, teens, parents and caregivers.


Encourages children and teens to complete the Summer Reading program.


Assists customers with public technology.


Assists with displaying and organizing books, keeps area neat, and fills displays.


10. Assists with group registration for programs.


11. Assists with youth services programs and special events; assists with summer lunch and after school snack programs, helps set up programing rooms, organizes program materials and helps to clean up programing spaces.


12. May answer basic reference questions.


13. Supports the Code of Conduct by following up with customers when necessary; alerts Security Officer and/or manager about suspicious behavior.


14. Utilizes computer applications and Library equipment, maintains current knowledge of system wide and location specific procedures, processes, policies and operations. Utilizes e-mail and voicemail and other Library technology to maintain open channels of communication.


15. Performs additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or G.E.D.


Experience and desire to work with children of all ages.


Ability to operate Library technology systems, including personal computer, software programs and other job related equipment.


Acts with the customer in mind using information gained from interacting with the customers. Meets the expectations and requirements of external and internal customers. (Customer Focus)


HIGHLY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
Associate’s degree or one to three years’ of formal training beyond high school.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:
The following is the common technology used in this position and is not all inclusive.


Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and other Library related software applications.


SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:
No direct reports.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Rare.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Location will determine work schedule; may be required to work evenings.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work requires physical effort in the repetitive handling of materials or boxes and tools or equipment of up to 30 pounds in non-strenuous work positions and/or continual standing or walking at least 60% of the time.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences or commercial vehicles (e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire requlations and traffic signals, and/or working in moderate outdoor weather conditions).
