The General Trainee position in Gas Delivery is an entry-level wage scale position with a line of progression leading to Journeyman and Foreman positions in Gas Operations.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Exposure to hazards, extreme temperatures, indoor / outdoor work, confined spaces, excessive noise, dust.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Exerting up to 140 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; grasping and gripping; standing for long periods of time; stooping, crouching, and bending for long periods of time; walking, lifting or moving up to approximately 140 lbs. occasionally. Other Physical Requirements include: sense of sight, sound, smell, touch, and the ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)


POSITION SUMMARY:


  • General work duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Learning the knowledge and skills to assess dangerous gas leak situations;

  • Set/remove gas meters;

  • Light/adjust customer appliances;

  • Troubleshoot/isolate gas service/use problems;

  • Cut-in/cut-out electric meters;

  • Maintain and repair pressure regulating equipment;

  • Maintain corrosion control systems;

  • Perform construction activities associated with the installation of gas mains and services;

  • Operate excavating equipment

Persons selected for the General Trainee position will receive comprehensive classroom training with examinations to develop knowledge of:


  • Gas system components;

  • Operation and maintenance procedures;

  • Customer service/relations;

  • Various gas appliances;

  • Safety procedures;

  • Information regarding appropriate rules, regulations and codes governing the distribution of natural gas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent;

  • Experience working in a similar environment;

  • Ability to pass all applicable assessments to include reading, math and mechanical aptitude;

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations and measurement functions;

  • Effective oral communication skills;

  • Ability to lift/move/transport objects weighing up to approximately 90 lbs.;

  • Ability to learn how to operate heavy vehicles and excavating equipment;

  • Ability to work shift work/overtime/call duty as required;

  • Ability /willingness to work alone, outdoors, in all weather conditions and at any hour of the day or night;

  • A valid Texas driver’s license with a history of a safe driving record in accordance with CPS policies, procedures, safety standards and applicable laws and regulations;

  • Ability to obtain a Texas Class ‘A’ (Commercial) driver’s license within 90 days.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Previous/current experience in pipeline construction, pipe-fitting and/or plumbing;

  • Familiarity with common gas construction and maintenance tools/equipment.

Wage scale: $18.96/hr. (Non-negotiable)
