1) Rationale and context of the assignment.
The Media Section in the Division of Communication (DOC) requires consultancy services of a Media and Communication Specialist.
The Media Section is UNICEF’s primary resource for journalists, providing the latest news reporting on issues related to children and UNICEF’s work. All content produced by the Media Section is communicated to international media and to UNICEF Country Offices and National Committees for dissemination to local media.
2) Scope of Work:
Under the guidance of the Media Chief, and in close collaboration with other UNICEF HQ Divisions and field offices, the Consultant will support media strategy and outreach, and produce press materials in support of UNICEF priorities, especially in emergencies.

3) Responsibilities: The consultant is required to provide support including:**
• Working closely with UNICEF HQ departments, country and regional offices, develop media strategies to raise the profile of children and children’s issues – as well as the role of UNICEF, including on emergencies.
• Pitch child / UNICEF-related stories to print, broadcast and online media.
• Develop press materials including press releases, Q&As, messaging, fact sheets and media briefs, and quicklines to deal with areas of sensitive / reputational risk.
• Monitor breaking news on children’s issues; react rapidly and appropriately to strengthen UNICEF’s profile with the media as an authoritative voice for children.
• Act as on-call spokesperson as necessary.
• Support the wider media team when required.
• Perform other tasks as required.
4) Tangible and measurable outputs/deliverables of work assignment:
Timely and accurate media materials produced and disseminated to international media, National Committees, NGOs, and other appropriate audiences, and placed in UNICEF global communication web-based platforms;
Specific media strategies and plans developed and implemented in an effective and timely manner.
This assignment requires daily work, including on weekends/evenings as and when required.
5) Qualifications or specialized knowledge/ experience required:
• Excellent writing and editing skills.
• Strong news judgment.
• Solid understanding of current events, international affairs.
• Interest in latest developments in traditional and digital media.
• Experience working in an international, multi-cultural environment.
• Background in journalism desirable.
• Working knowledge of one UN language in addition to English preferred.
• Familiarity with the UN system and of UNICEF is an asset
• Advanced degree in journalism, communications, international relations or other related field, or University Degree with equivalent experience.
