ABOUT THE AREA
Crisscrossed by rivers, mountains and vineyards, Metropolitan Portland offers more than urban adventure. Within a few minutes drive of downtown Portland are Pinot-producing wineries (most with year-round tasting rooms), kayak-friendly waterways that nudge wildlife preserves and, of course, the glorious foothills of Mount Hood. And if it s urban adventure you crave, be warned that Portland, the Rose City, isn t your run-of-the-mill urban megapolis. An effervescent arts community, dozens of urban parks and green spaces, a lively downtown, complete with an open air plaza that serves as the community s living room and a world-class public transportation system, are just few of the reasons that make this one of the country s most livable cities.

Lying at the intersection of two great rivers, the Portland Metro area is an ideal playground for water hounds, with exceptional fishing, sailing and jet skiing. With over 200 parks including the 5,000-acre Forest Park, the country s largest urban wooded park, the world s smallest park and one of two volcanoes (Mt. Tabor Park) within a U.S. city, it s easy to see why Portland is a haven for walkers, hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. Guided kayaking (try a trip around Ross Island), canoeing and wildlife-watching excursions are available through local tour companies. Just an hour away, there s year-round skiing and boarding at Mt. Hood, windsurfing in the Gorge, whitewater thrills on the Clackamas River and paddling along the serene Scappoose Bay Wetlands.

Portland has experienced an exciting surge in its food scene. Chefs from all over the world continue to abandon top ships (from famed New York City hotspots such as Caf des Artists, Union Square Caf and Gramercy Tavern), to turn their attention to this beautiful Northwest city that sits on a gold mine of fresh produce, fresh seafood, free-range meats, and world-class wine and beer. Daily access to such high-quality goods allows chefs to experiment with ever-changing menus, utilizing what s fresh and available at the moment, which is usually a lot.
