The Division of Parks and Recreation mission is to provide an outdoor recreational experience for Ohio State Park visitors’ that exceeds their expectations.
ABOUT THE DIVISION OF PARKS AND RECREATION :
The Division of Parks was created as a division of ODNR in 1949 with the statutory obligation to create, supervise, operate and maintain a system of state parks and to promote their use by the public. Through land acquisition and transfer, the park system has grown from the original 30 parks to 74 state parks in 59 counties with over 174,000 acres of land and water resources. Facilities include eight resort lodges, two dining lodges, six golf courses, more than 9,000 campsites in 56 family campgrounds, 518 cottages, 36 visitor/nature centers, 80 swimming beaches and 18 swimming pools, 188 boat ramps and 7,583 boat docks, 463 picnic areas, and 1,167 miles of trails.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PARK OFFICER POSITION: Serves as law enforcement officer in the Central District headquartered at Delaware State Park & provides back up coverage as needed throughout Central Ohio District (Grand Lake St. Mary’s, Lake Loramie, Indian Lake, Kiser Lake, Mount Gilead, Buck Creek, Madison Lake, Deer Creek): patrols parks, preserves, & forests on land/water in boat, automobile, pickup truck or on foot to protect park property & advise visitors of unsafe actions; preserves evidence; assists other agencies (e.g., responds to call to back up local law enforcement officers); maintains driver’s license to drive state vehicle for pa-trolling.
Completes investigations into criminal matters, rules & regulations, & traffic accidents related to Parks & Recreation, Forestry, Watercraft, Natural Areas, Wildlife & Recreational Trails; enforces Ohio Revised Code [ORC], Parks & Recreation, Watercraft, Natural Areas, Wildlife & Recreational Trail laws; issues citations; serves warrants; makes physical arrest; testifies in court.
Maintains records related to law enforcement activities: prepares & maintains records (e.g., records activities in daily log, writes incident reports & citations, assigns evidence property tags).
Assists with fire detection, prevention, & suppression; performs wildland fire support as directed within training & physical capabilities; processes fire reports for reimbursement of fire departments; investigates fires to determine cause & enforces fire laws; assists in training of wildland fire related course; assists with training local fire departments in forest fire suppression techniques; checks & maintains fire tools & equipment; attends periodic meetings of Fire Departments & Fire Associations; performs annual inspection of federal excess property; completes Federal Excess Personal Property [FEPP] inspection forms; updates annually fire department in-formation forms.
Assist park visitors with problems: gives directions to park visitors; searches for lost children; retrieves keys from locked vehicles; answers questions about park & facilities; assists with programs (e.g., conducts tours, leads group on trails hikes, directs traffic, & crowd of people to destination); assists in emergencies (e.g., gives first aid or advises visitor where to obtain medical care, calls for emergency vehicle, keeps victim calm until help arrives); assists with special programs & volunteer programs (e.g., trail hikes, campouts, nature pro-grams).
Maintains park facilities & grounds: performs routine & preventive maintenance to park vehicles (e.g., checks tires for proper air inflation, checks oil & air filters, checks fluid levels, cleans & waxes vehicles); coordinates vehicle repairs (e.g., writes work orders, checks vehicles visually); maintains park facilities & grounds: (e.g., removes dead branches from trees, picks up litter; performs enforcement & safety related tasks (e.g., posts signs, constructs barricades, removes dead branches from trees); cleans work area.
Monitors activities of new/seasonal park officers &/or park officer cadets: provides orientation & training to new park officers; assist with other park operations (e.g., registers campers, dock fees); provides park in-formation, directions & resource for questions to park visitors & seasonal staff; attends job related training (e.g., Incident Command System Courses, Firearms, Taser, Driving, Defensive Tactics/Subject Control, Impact Weapons, Legal Update/Search & Seizure, Investigations, Radar/Lidar); qualifies annually with firearms.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT: Per Article 31.05 of FOP Contract, must maintain agency required physical condition as outline by department directive & pass any required medical examinations; must qualify semi-annually with firearms & related equipment: must maintain OPOTC certification: must qualify for $1,000 surety bond if acts as agent of state is collection of money.
UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Works variable hours & weekends: works outside exposed to unpleasant weather conditions: may work alone; may be exposed to violent situations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Successful completion of Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Council Course or Park Officer Academy Course;
- And must be 21 years of age per Section 124.41 Ohio Revised Code;
- And valid driver’s license.
- And Probationary period is one year.
-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
NOTE: Applicant must successfully pass background check by appointing authority, which includes polygraph, psychological & medical examination. Per Article 31.05 of FOP Contract, applicant must be able to perform the Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Program (OPOTC) Fitness Testing Entry Standards For New Recruits. The final applicant accepted for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointment. An applicant with positive test results will not be offered employment per Section 123:1-76-09 Ohio Administrative Code.
