The Senior Accountant, is responsible for running monthly revenue recognition and costing processes, closing MSH general ledger accurately and timely on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis; reviewing and posting journal entries, reviewing and preparing account reconciliations.
Specific Responsibilities
Complete a timely and accurate general ledger close cycle: 50%
- Facilitate and complete month end close processes, ensuring completion of monthly financials.
- Complete revenue recognition and costing processes; analyze posted revenue and cost allocations prior to monthly close to ensure proper revenue recognition and proper indirect cost recovery for diverse donor requirements.
- Prepare and review account reconciliations; post adjusting journal entries, as required
- Support the Accounting Manager in reviewing diverse financial transactions, proposing and documenting required entries in accordance with GAAP.
- Assist with analysis of monthly financial statements and report on variances.
- Support the General Ledger Manager with research of applicable GAAP and propose and implement required modifications to existing accounting processes, as required; ensure compliance with the organization’s Cost Accounting Standard for all federally funded projects.
- Support the organization’s payroll, country finance, cash, and accounts payable teams, serving as designated back up to key functions, as required.
Coordinate and support annual and donor specific audits: 25%
- Play a key role in the coordination of the annual year-end audit and drive financial statement preparation.
- Support A-133 audits process.
- Facilitate and participate in donor audits, as required.
Document accounting policies & procedures: 15%
- Proactively review existing accounting processes and recommend and implement improvements to accounting workflows and internal controls.
- Work with General Ledger Manager to document accounting positions, policies, and procedures; Provide assistance as needed in the development of MSH-wide standardized forms and procedures.
Other duties: 10 %
- Assist the Accounting Manager and Director of Accounting with special projects, as needed. MSH is experiencing significant growth and business transformation, the Sr Accountant will have the opportunity to be exposed to a significant level of ad-hoc analysis and projects if core duties above are delivered timely, accurately and professionally.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or equivalent experience; Masters and/or CPA strongly preferred.
- 4+ years of public, private/nonprofit accounting experience required; Big Four or National Public Accounting Firm experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of Navigator or similar ERP preferred; experience with Quickbooks a plus.
- Experience with federal cost reimbursement practices, such as the Federal Acquisitions Regulations (FAR) and USAID regulations desirable.
- Must have a solid understanding of the accounting close cycle in order to independently complete the accounting close cycle, including running revenue recognition, costing, and related allocation routines
- Knowledge of revenue recognition and/or cost principles preferred.
- Ability to work closely with the Country Finance accountants and other accounting and finance team members to ensure an accurate and timely close.
- Solid account reconciliation skills with demonstrated ability to independently analyze account transactions and review /post journal entries for diverse accounts & support staff accountants in journal posting and account reconciliations.
- Must be able to take a key role in the coordination of the annual year-end audit and drive financial statement preparation; knowledge of A-133 audits a plus.
- Knowledge of Nonprofit accounting and fund accounting a plus; experience with foreign currency accounting and multinational accounting a plus; prior work experience with non-USG, foundations, and other donors preferred.
- Ability to proactively review existing accounting processes and recommend and implement improvements to accounting workflows and internal controls.
- Ability to work with General Ledger Manager to document accounting positions, policies, and procedures.
- Must be comfortable assuming key roles in accounting system upgrades, including completion and documentation of testing.
- Excellent Excel skills with demonstrated ability to extract data and summarize financial information for diverse internal reconciliation and reporting purposes.
- Familiarization with Google Apps and Microsoft Office; knowledge of Serenic Navigator (or similar accounting system).
- Fluent English required; working knowledge of French and/or Spanish a plus.
- Self-starter who can work well independently and also work effectively as a team member; must be able to independently drive the accounting close according to the monthly close calendar.
- Ability to work under pressure with positive attitude, remain focused on results, and respond to changing priorities.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to operate in a culturally diverse organization, and communicate to all levels within the organization.
Physical Demands:
- Office environment including keyboard use, pulling drawers, lifting papers <10 lbs. Ability to travel internationally as needed (up to 20% time).
