The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) seeks a communications intern to assist its advocacy department in preparing for upcoming events, including the 2015 International Press Freedom Awards, the launch of the annual killed and imprisoned census, and the launch of special reports. The intern will be part of an advocacy department that works closely with CPJ’s regional teams. Excellent organizational skills, the ability to work independently or in a team in a fast-paced environment, and a working knowledge of the dynamics of news media and social media are essential to succeeding in this role.

The position is a full-time, non-exempt, temporary position paid at minimum wage and based in New York City.


The communications intern’s key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


● Assist in the preparation and execution of CPJ’s annual International Press Freedom Awards (IPFA). The candidate MUST be available on November 24 (including the evening) and 25.


● Curate and manage CPJ’s IPFA database and digitize old files.


● Support CPJ’s social media presence.


● Produce promotional materials and Web content (depending on video and multimedia skills) for special reports and IPFA.


● Maintain CPJ’s global media contacts database and coordinate with regional teams on the inclusion and organization of their contacts.


● Assist with logistical preparations for events, press conferences, and meetings.


● Provide general administrative and logistical support to the advocacy team, including event planning, staffing, and note-taking at internal and external events. Participate in wider-ranging collaborative projects as needed.


Desired skills and experience:


● Experience organizing large volumes of data and/or developing organizational systems.


● Strong attention to detail.


● Desire to develop media relations skills.


● Deadline-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced environment.


● Deep interest and commitment to press freedom.


● Strong writing and editing skills.


● Knowledge of social media and news media outlets and trends.


● Video or design skills are preferred.


● Foreign language skills are an asset.
