Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position: United States Military Entrance Processing Command (US MEPCOM), with headquarters in Building 3400, Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes (North Chicago), IL, is a joint service command under the direction of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Personnel Policy and is staffed by representatives of all branches of the Armed Forces. The command, through its 65 Military Entrance Processing Stations, determines whether applicants are qualified for enlistment based on standards set by each of the services. Two geographic sectors provide intermediate management in operating the MEPS. The Eastern Sector Headquarters and Western Sector Headquarters are co-located with the Command Headquarters.

This position will be filled on a permanent basis.

As a Human Resource Assistant (Military/Office Automation), you will be responsible for the following:

Administer pre-oath brief to military applicants

Fingerprint military applicants for background checks

Search computerized and hard copy files for applicant’s documents

Maintain records for military applicants in accordance with record keeping guidelines

Prepare enlistment forms/orders for military applicants

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.


To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as:

•Briefs military applicants on enlistment rules and procedures;

•Obtains and verifies data for completion of applicants enlistment forms;

•Uses personal computer and office automation software programs to accomplish tasks.

Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05: Four years above high school.

Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05: To qualify based on partial experience and partial education you must have specialized experience but less than one year; and have more than two (2) years but less than four (4) years of education. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then take your total semester hours (undergraduate/graduate) and subtract 60, then divide the sum by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify.

In order to qualify for this position, based on your education, education substitution, or combination of education and experience, you must have completed the education requirement, or will complete this requirement by the closing date of this announcement. If you will not complete this requirement within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement, you will be rated as Not Qualified for this position.

One year trial/probationary period may be required.

Direct Deposit of Pay is required. This position has been designated as non-sensitive as defined in DoD 5200.2-R, and requires you to obtain and maintain for the duration of employment, a no access personnel security clearance. This position requires that you are able to type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute typing sample with 3 or fewer mistakes. This position may require applicant to work an occasional Saturday and/or shift work (work before 0600 or after 1800 hours). This position will require applicant to work unscheduled overtime to accommodate fluctuations in workload based on the daily mission requirements.
