Chatstaff is a chat-based virtual reference backup service, currently serving hundreds of public and academic libraries. All librarians deal with all client libraries, and are expected to be able to efficiently find information to answer questions about local services and to be able to help with online research and general reference questions. Librarians are also expected to be able to juggle chats well, often handling two or more simultaneously without sacrificing quality. This is a very fast-paced environment, requiring quick thinking and sharp observation in addition to strong reference and research skills.
Required qualifications:
- ALA-accredited master’s degree
- Experience in a reference environment
- Experience with some online databases
- Availability to work at least 4 hours every weekend
- Ability to communicate effectively in a chat-based environment.
- Ability to work from home without getting distracted
- Ability to handle multiple simultaneous tasks
- Ability to work independently and use personal initiative to find solutions.
- Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies.
- Stable, high-speed internet connection
- Desktop or laptop computer (not a tablet)
Preferred qualifications:
- Demonstrable chat reference experience
- Experience will all major databases
- Familiarity with Jing
- Personal use of instant messaging/chat software
This is a home-based opportunity, and absolutely requires the ability to work from home without getting distracted. Employees are required to provide their own computer and reliable high-speed internet. A laptop is preferred for all shifts, and required by some.
Demonstrable chat reference experience is strongly preferred.
Slight preference given to residents of NC, KS, IL,MD, VA and HI.
We are accepting applications for all shifts, but are currently most interested in people who can work 10pm-midnight Monday through Thursday.
