Chemonics seeks a short-term intern for the USAID-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) project, which is based in DC and active worldwide. The data management intern will support the Data Management Specialist in her efforts to archive the various FEWS NET databases.
Responsibilities include:
- Work with National Technical Managers and Regional Specialists to identify, organize, and archive primary and secondary data relevant to FEWS NET’s work
- Identify, collect, and clean historical agricultural production, prices, trade flow, nutrition, and livelihoods data, according to the needs of the sectoral advisors and FEWS NET senior management team
- Maintain electronic copies of all data collected in a well-organized and logical structure, as directed by the Data Management Specialist
- Work with the Data Management Specialists to clean and process raw data files, reconcile missing metadata, and prepare the data for upload to the FDW is applicable
- Assist the Data Management Specialist and sectoral advisors to provide guidance and training on the use of the various FEWS NET databases
- Support the Data Management Specialists in liaising with project staff and partner organizations in data archive issues
- Working with the GIS Specialist to identify data that requires geo-coding
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a university
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel required
- Proficiency in other Database management systems, including MS Access, desirable
- Working experience with Adobe Acrobat (for extracting data from PDF files) also desirable
- Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
- French and/or Spanish language skills desirable
