Library Assistant (Hourly) - City of Glendale, CA - Glendale, CA

THIS IS AN UNCLASSIFIED, NON-CIVIL SERVICE, HOURLY POSITION WITH NO MEDICAL, DENTAL OR ACCRUED LEAVE BENEFITS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF AB1522 – HEALTHY WORKPLACE HEALTHY FAMILY ACT.

The work schedule can include days, evenings, and weekend (9:00 am-6:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday) hours. Hours may vary from week to week as needed. Location will vary as needed. The current need is for less than 10 hours a week and primarily Sundays all day.


This Para-professional classification performs a range of public service duties. Assists with basic adult and/or children’s reference and reader’s advisory, collection development, and programming.


Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assists the public in accessing information and library resources, via in person and telephone interactions.


Provides some level of reference and research assistance.


Represents the library in public forums including providing school visits, classroom talks, orientation sessions, library tours and community events.


Assists with planning and implementing programs including but not limited to storytelling, films, arts and crafts, exhibitions, and literary events.


Provides reader’s advisory assistance for adults, teens and children from early literacy through the eighth grade.


Assists in database maintenance.


Assists with Circulation functions.


Instructs the public in use of the online computer catalog, library databases, the internet and self-service functions.


Provides clerical support.


Troubleshoots computer hardware and software.


Initiates inter-library loans, conducts online material and information searches, produces subject bibliographies and reading lists, selects and maintains library materials.


Maintains currency of professional knowledge by attending professional meetings and staff conferences. Reads professional publications to remain informed on new publications, trends in publishing, automation and public library practices.


Participates in staff meetings.


Maintains records and statistics, and prepares reports.


Directs clerical and part-time staff when the unit supervisor is absent.


Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.

Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.


Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.


Minimum Requirements:


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

Automated online catalogs and circulation systems.

Basic knowledge of cataloging and filing rules and relevant print and online resources.

Standard literature and reference sources for both children from preschool through the eighth grade and adults.


Working knowledge of:

Automated library systems.

LC subject headings, and Dewey Decimal System.


Skill in:

Effective customer service

Effective public relations.


Ability to:

Be an effective team member.

Be flexible in all work related situations.

Communicate with and relate to a diverse clientele.

Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance by the end of the probationary period.

Experience

Three years of progressively responsible experience in a library setting or a related field.


Education/Training

Two years college level course work or degree/certificate in a Library Technician or Library Assistant program.


License(s)/Certification(s)

Valid Class C California driver’s license.

An equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training may substitute for the listed minimum requirements.
