United States of America: Senior Media Manager and Content Editor


Develop relationships with press and thought leaders; form and influence the direction for future media relations. Maintain and leverage media expertise to liaise and collaborate with colleagues from MSH communication teams at all levels, including technical groups and countries. Lead/advise colleagues to consistent organizational messaging and positioning. Function as a forward- thinking leader and diplomatic ambassador for MSH. Understand how all MSH communications functions fit together.


Specific Responsibilities


Support, market, and influence the perception of MSH’s brand with the media: Manage the MSH blog (30%)


  • Proactively assess trends in the media; analyze and assess the same against MSH’s competitive l In conjunction with the Sr. Director, maintain strategic data and trend information to support current and future positioning of MSH within competitive landscape. Read and track articles from other influential global health organizations to gain insight on trends in the media.

  • Implement and contribute to a thought leadership strategic plan in order to position MSH as a leader in global health systems strengthening, UHC, maternal and child health, and epidemic preparedness and reposition the MSH blog as a “go-to” platform for thought leadership.

  • Develop key themes and topics for opinion pieces and blogs in conjunction with Sr. Director, Strategic Communications and Online Communications Specialist relating to our global health priorities such as health systems strengthening, epidemic prevention, and maternal and child health.

  • Create plans for and manage the MSH blog. Write op-eds, letters to the editor, opinion pieces, and other short essay Working with VPs and others, conduct related research for proof points and evidence for newspapers, journals, and blogs providing positions and opinions on global health practices.

Participate in writing of high level marketing pieces (10%)


  • Work with VP, GPMC and Sr. Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations to help write/develop marketing materials as needed.

  • Assist with writing for MSH website or social media as needed.

Pitch stories and develop relationships with media and online influencers (30%)


  • Pitch stories.

  • Draft press releases in coordination with Sr. Director, Strategic Communications.

  • Contribute to communications, brand plan, and editorial calendar development.

  • Pitch stories about MSH’s global health results and innovations to national and international media.

  • Assist MSH countries and country reps in garnering media attention.

  • Maintain MSH press lists.

  • Track MSH press coverage.

  • Follow key reporters on social media (Twitter) and track trend

  • Work closely with CEO Communications Specialist, especially on media outreach and events related to CEO’s forthcoming boo

  • Monitor and analyze trends in major medi

  • Manage press events in coordination with the Marketing and Events Specialist.

Manage MSH Communications Content Engine (30%)


  • Develop and manage a creative Communications Content Engine. Liaise to ensure this overarching system for materials produced throughout all communications groups is well-managed and fully integrated.

  • Work collaboratively to ensure that the content development process and the Content Engine is maintained with information and activity across MSH communications teams.

  • Ensure collaboration and alignment across priority storylines and themes.

  • Manage editorial calendar and weekly calendar team meetings, confirm key editorial themes for the month and outline plan to execute, update the calendar and circulate to broader team. Manage weekly check-ins on Content Engine to provide status update on deliverables and assignments.

  • Identify content and plan for collecting it in response to timely requests from media/reporters.

Job Requirements


  • Advanced degree in communications, journalism, or public health.

  • 10 years of related experience preferably in communications with focus on global health issues and work for a nonprofit organization.

Knowledge and Skills


  • Excellent judgement and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on influencing and persuading others.

  • Demonstrated experience pitching stories to key reporters and maintaining these relationships.

  • Exceptional organizational and teamwork skills.

  • Conceptual, writing and analytical skills; extensive ability to write and speak persuasively to set MSH apart.

  • Thinks outside the box to help MSH “stand out”.

Competencies


  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work both independently and on teams.

  • Initiate and organize own work while working productively as a liaison across teams at MSH.

  • Establish priorities in a time-sensitive environment and meet deadlines with attention to detail and quality; produce pieces in a timely manner; ability to ghostwrite for others without proprietorship of authorship.

  • English language ability requires native fluency in spoken English and exceptional written competency.

Physical Demands


  • Keyboard use, pulling drawers, lifting papers <10 lbs.

  • Travel up to 5%.
