Under the supervision of the Lost Pines Complex Superintendent and daily direction of the Bastrop State Park Manager, this position is responsible for planning, preparing, implementing, and monitoring the natural, cultural and recreational resource conservation activities for The Lost Pines State Park Complex including Bastrop and Buescher State Parks. Assists with management goals relating to natural, cultural, and recreational resources. Conducts resource inventory and monitors in accordance with applicable laws and use of current GIS related technologies. Performs resource management activities to include historic site maintenance, sensitive site management, prescribed fire, mechanical vegetation removal, etc. Responsible for resource planning activities to include resource surveys and visitor use planning; conducts field work to include management of volunteers, working with partner organizations and independent on-site field work. Manages resource restoration service contracts and projects from inception to completion. Coordinates with park staff and regional resource specialists and builds neighbor and community relations. Educates and interprets resources and works with volunteer groups. Responds to emergency situations and performs as incident command within responsible area. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

Qualification Guidelines:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:


  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:

Licensure:

  • Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid class “C” Texas driver’s license;

  • Must possess or be able to obtain, within one year of employment, the National Wildfire Coordinator Group’s (NWCG) Fire Fighter Type II certification;

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license and certification.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass, within one year of employment, the FFTII arduous duty physical fitness standard (walk 3 miles with 45 lb. pack in 45 minutes or less).

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:
Education:


  • One year of experience in natural or cultural resource management may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: Park Administration, Recreation & Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Anthropology/Archeology, History or closely related field.

Experience:


  • Experience in natural/cultural resource management.

  • Experience working with volunteers.

  • Experience with customer service and/or public outreach.

  • Experience using GIS software.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of natural and cultural resource management techniques;

  • Knowledge of native plant communities and natural landscapes;

  • Knowledge of recreational resource planning and maintenance;

  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

  • Skill in managing projects simultaneously;

  • Skill in volunteer coordination;

  • Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

  • Skill in prescribed burning;

  • Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

  • Ability to plan and conduct cultural and natural resource inventories and monitoring surveys, compile data, and prepare reports that support a sound resource management program;

  • Ability to conduct resource restoration service contract oversight and management;

  • Ability to complete communication documents to include correspondence, reports, presentations and special assignments;

  • Ability to develop, market and provide community partnerships, activities, special events, public outreach and education programming;

  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

  • Ability to work as a member of a team;

  • Ability to use GPS units and interface with personal computers and GIS and mapping software;

  • Ability to handle emergency situations and promote a safe environment for staff and public;

  • Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.


Additional Information:


WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Required to work in a public park with overnight camping;

  • Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

  • Subject to 24-hour on-call for emergency situations and public service requests;

  • Required to travel 10% with possible overnight stays;

  • Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety standards;

  • Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

  • Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

  • Required to perform extreme physical abilities such as manually clearing burn lanes, extinguishing fires and cutting brush and timber. Possible hazardous conditions exist in areas, such as fire events;

  • Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
