Development Associate


The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) seeks to hire a Development Associate who will be an integral part of a small development team that is working to advance and shape the NDI development program. This position will report directly to the Director of Philanthropy.
Primary Responsibilities:
Special Events and Outreach Management


  • Develop and manage all aspects of NDI special events including drafting and managing event budget; developing and sending marketing and event materials; preparing event program; managing all event logistics; managing event registration; maintaining donor database; and sending invoices and receipts;

  • Develop and manage all aspects of board and donor trips, including: drafting and managing budgets; developing and sending marketing and event materials; managing all event logistics; maintaining donor database; sending of invoices and receipts; and liaising with trip attendees;

  • Help plan and execute other special events for NDI’s Board of Directors, including dinners, quarterly Board meetings, and conference calls; and

  • Liaise with other departments to support NDI internal events including room set-up and catering.

Fund Development:


  • Oversee all stewardship activities for the development operation, including managing Raiser’s Edge database; managing correspondence; ensuring all acknowledgements are completed in a timely fashion; securing appropriate files and information within the office;

  • Work closely and collaborate with his/her colleagues around special stewardship needs and outreach;

  • Manage outreach to all NDI alumni and other solicitation appeals e.g., year-end giving, PayPal, online giving, etc.


  • Assist with important administrative needs and correspondence, including cost reconciliations, travel logistics, etc.




  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four (4) years of work experience;




  • Demonstrated coursework and/or internships in philanthropic management, international development, political campaigning, organizational development, legislative affairs or related subject;




  • Experience with fundraising for nonprofit organizations preferred, especially in the area of special events;




  • Knowledge of and experience with Raiser’s Edge strongly preferred;




  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of staff, donors, and NGO community;




  • Good oral and written communication skills to effectively present information and respond to questions;




  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team;




  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs; experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired;




  • Working knowledge of basic budget and accounting procedures;




  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;




  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines;




  • Ability to apply discretion and maintain confidential information; and




  • Available for local travel; work during some evenings and weekends around special events will be required.
