Minimum of three years experience in corrections, juvenile supervision or case management. Custodial child care experience preferred. Supervision experience preferred.
Must meet qualifications and be eligible to be certified as a Juvenile Supervision Officer and Juvenile Probation Officer by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
Must have thorough knowledge of correctional management and juvenile justice principles and practices, including casework methods with particular reference to the problems of socially and emotionally maladjusted children.
Must be available to handle any emergency situation as they arise any time day or night. Must make home phone number and department cell phone number available to subordinate staff and the Director.
Bilingual in English/Spanish desired.
Must successfully complete the department’s pre-employment requirements and background investigation.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must have a current Texas Drivers License and show proof of automobile liability insurance coverage.
Typical Duties:
Responsible for the performance management of team leaders and Detention staff to include: supervising, coaching, quarterly and yearly evaluations, and ensuring compliance of juvenile supervision officer certification requirements.
Responsible for managing the tactical components of projects and initiatives to ensure that deliverables are produced according to established timelines.
Manages the critical processes needed to conduct effective Juvenile Disciplinary and Grievance Reviews.
Manages the critical processes needed to maintain the Detention data base.
Manages the development of staff scheduling to ensure fairness and efficiency.
Monitors the accrual of overtime and compensatory time each pay period.
Manages the daily programmatic components of the Detention Center through the effective supervision of the Team Leaders and essential personnel.
Conducts and/or monitors investigations into employee grievances.
Conducts and/or monitors investigations into allegations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Conducts training to enhance staff core, technical, and leadership competencies.
Conducts tactical meetings to ensure alignment with operational objectives.
Monitors the daily population of juveniles and participates in CMT (Capacity Management Team) meetings.
Monitors staff adherence to court scheduling and supervision requirements and testifies as needed.
Participates in interviews for prospective new hires.
Addresses concerns and/or complaints of parents, juveniles and the public.
Participates in assessing operations to identify gaps in policy and procedure.
Monitors critical processes needed to maintain TJJD audit compliance.
Responsible for effectively and efficiently maintaining the proper staff to juvenile ratio in accordance with federal, state and local standards.
Prepares and completes reports and other documentation in accordance with applicable standards, policies and procedures, federal, state and local requirements.
Monitors and maintains a safe physical environment for all residents/staff.
Makes critical and sound decisions during emergencies or potentially dangerous situations.
Participates in the development of, implementation and update of any aspect of the Detention Center.
Responsible for leading and motivating staff to complete unit objectives.
On call seven days a week, 24-hours a day.
Responsible for becoming certified in Handle with Care (HWC) or any other restraint technique adopted by the department.
Serves as the Detention PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Manager and works with the Director and PREA Coordinator to ensure compliance of the section.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Summary:
The Detention Senior Officer is responsible for collaborating with the Detention Director to ensure the unit’s goals and staff activities are aligned to the mission and vision of the Department. Responsible for managing fidelity to critical processes such as: performance management, policy management, and program management to include the direct supervision of team leaders and oversight of Detention staff. Responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective implementation of the day-to-day operations. The Detention Senior Officer assumes the duties of the Director in his/her absence.
