Parks, Recreation and Community Partnerships Coordinator - City of Ventura - Ventura, CA

Under general supervision, implements, and participates in designated specialized recreation, cultural, and social or senior services programs, activities and events. Schedules, trains and supervises the work of assigned part-time and/or temporary staff and/or volunteers. Performs a variety of clerical and administrative support functions for assigned program area.

An eligibility list is being established to fill the current full-time vacancy in the Youth Sports program, as well as future full-time, part-time, and temporary related vacancies.

  • Works closely with colleagues to meet City goals and objectives.

  • Is bi-lingual in Spanish and English, although this is not required.


  • EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


    Organizes, implements, and participates in assigned programs in specialized areas, such as adult sports, youth sports, recreation classes, senior and adult activities and centers, interpretive and instructional programs, volunteer programs, after school programs, historical tours and historic site management, specials events, concerts and cultural activities.


    Assists in hiring, training and evaluating assigned part-time, and/or temporary staff, and/or volunteers to implement planned recreational, cultural and/or special events activities. Orients new staff and develops staffing schedules.


    Provides customer service to applicants, participants, and the general public. Acts as information source regarding assigned programs and City’s leisure services activities and facilities. Sends requested brochures, schedules and applications. Refers inquiries to other City or leisure services as appropriate.


    Reviews and documents the progress and effectiveness of specific and assigned recreational, cultural and social services and programs being offered by the City and develops and presents recommendations for additions, deletions or revisions. Justifies recommendations with appropriate background data.


    Provides input into the preparation of annual budget for assigned programs; monitors and accounts for assigned monies. Initiates and coordinates the purchase of supplies and equipment.


    Oversees, coordinates and participates in the preparation, scheduling and use of required facilities for assigned programs and activities. Communicates with scheduled groups to confirm use of the facility and identifies the needs of the user group. Updates emergency and other pertinent information on a regular and as-needed basis.


    Responds to and documents all incidents involving injury, behavioral problems, and/or any unusual events. Communicates to appropriate resources and supervisor. Maintains records and files on all participants in assigned programs and activities and all related records and documentation as necessary.


    Researches and prepares various reports, publicity and statistical data; initiates and prepares brochures, notices, catalogs, newsletters, bulletins, and press releases as directed. Depending upon assignment, may assist with grant administration, tracking and reporting.


    Purchases and maintains inventory and supplies for assigned programs. Monitors and assesses the condition of the facilities being used in terms of suitability, physical condition, and safety. Reports facility maintenance concerns promptly. Initiates and coordinates repair of products and equipment utilized in assigned programs and activities.


    Attends meetings, workshops, and conferences; makes presentations and provides information regarding assigned programs and the City’s recreational/leisure services upon request. Develops community partnerships for the implementation of programming. Serves as staff liaison to various groups, boards and/or commissions.


    Performs other duties as assigned.


    LICENSE/CERTIFICATES
    License :


    • Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license may be required.

    • If duties include driving either a mini-bus or van, a California Class B driver’s license, with passenger endorsement, auto transmission and air brake restrictions, must be obtained within six months of employment.

    • If duties include driving either a mini-bus or van, according to the Department of Transportation, drug testing is required.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of some college course work in a field related to public administration, recreation, cultural arts, or social services, and two years of progressively responsible experience implementing services in the social services, senior services, cultural arts, or recreation field; OR in lieu of college coursework, a total of three years of experience as described above. Depending upon assignment, the ability to speak Spanish, in addition to English, is desirable.


    Benefits
    Employment Information: Right to Work: Before employment candidates must submit documentation verifying legal right to work in the United States. Background Check: A pre-employment verification of background, references, and medical examination will be conducted. A drug screening may be required for some positions. Applicants for positions using City vehicles may be required to submit a DMV report. Probationary Period: Twelve months.


    Deferred Compensation: $442 per year will be matched in a 457 Plan.


    Medical & Dental Insurance: $232 monthly towards a selection of plans. Medical insurance is effective the first of the month after date of hire. Dental insurance is effective the first of the second month after date of hire.


    Optional Benefits: $469 monthly, applied toward medical insurance premiums. Unused money may be taken as cash, payable bi-weekly.


    Vision Insurance: City paid coverage for employees and dependents. Vision insurance is effective the first of the month after date of hire.


    Life Insurance: City paid term life insurance equal to the employee’s annual salary, and dependent life insurance of $2,000 per dependent.


    Disability Insurance: City paid short and long-term disability coverage.


    Retirement: Tier I – 2% @ 55/Single Highest Year of Compensation for Classic CalPERS members who worked for the City prior to December 31, 2012 and are returning to City employment. Employees make a 7% member contribution. Tier II – 2% @ 60/3-Year Final Compensation Period for Classic CalPERS members with less than a six-month break in service from another CalPERS or CalPERS’-reciprocal agency. Employees make a 7% member contribution. Tier III – 2% at 62/3-Year Final Compensation Period for New CalPERS members. Employees make a 6.25% member contribution. Additional details regarding the City’s retirement plan will be provided to candidates during the job offer process.


    Social Security: CalPERS members do not participate in Social Security retirement. Receiving a CalPERS benefit may affect your social security upon retirement. For further information contact a Social Security office or www.socialsecurity.gov/form1945 .


    Medicare: Employees participate only in the Medicare portion of Social Security. There is a 1.45% payroll deduction for this benefit.


    Annual Leave: 14.5 days per year, increasing to 24.5 days after 15 years service, for vacation or sick leave. Employees may use vacation after successful completion of probation.


    Personal Leave: 27 hours per calendar year.


    Holidays: 12 paid holidays per year.


    Part-Time Benefits: Regular part-time employees receive insurance, optional benefits, vacation, holidays, sick leave and disability programs proportionate to their regular work hours.


    Tuition Reimbursement: $2,500 per year for tuition and books for courses taken at accredited institution after completion of probation.


    Direct Deposit: Paychecks are automatically deposited to employee accounts.


    Flexible Workweek: A 9/80 workweek is available for some positions.


    Winter Shutdown: City Hall will be closed December 25 through January 1.


    Wellness Program: A comprehensive program is available, including on-site gym, exercise classes, downtown/beach walking routes, weight loss, and tips on nutrition and healthy lifestyle.
