The City of New Orleans Health Department seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Front Desk Clerk (Office Assistant Trainee) for the Healthcare for the Homeless program. The position will report to the Revenue and Operations Manager of Healthcare for the Homeless.
Job Requirements
A high school diploma or GED is required, two years of college is preferred, and a minimum of one year front desk experience; preferably in a hospital admission/registration department. Experienced in Medicaid, Medicare, and Managed Care Contracts; healthcare/medical billing and coding. The applicant should possess an advanced knowledge of medical terminology and Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook, etc.).
Works with patients, the community, and staff to complete the following responsibilities:
- Greet and register patients in a prompt, pleasant, and helpful manner; being culturally sensitive to our patients’ needs.
- Answer telephone and take messages.
- Schedule and coordinate patient appointments and provides appointment information to appropriate staff.
- Maintain and update physicians’ schedules ensuring patients receive properly scheduled appointments and confirmations.
- Verify patients’ demographic (address, phone number, insurance, etc.), insurance and payment information.
- Oversee waiting area, coordinating patient movement and report problems or irregularities to appropriate administrative staff.
- Maintains a clean, orderly waiting area and reading materials.
- Understand and follows organizational confidentiality and security policies and procedures regarding HIPAA regulations.
- Uses the electronic health record (EHR) to generate the patient’s bill.
- Prepares patients’ charts for next clinic day visits and updates profiles on all patients.
- Retrieve/send faxes and scans file.
- Assist with meeting preparation.
- Participate in clinic activities designed to maintain quality and safe care for patients served by the facility.
- Attend meetings/trainings as required.
- Promote a positive public image when representing the facility.

Professional Growth
- Participates in education experiences designed to maintain competence.
- Annually completes all required in-services and trainings (e.g. CPR, Infection Control, TB Skin Test, etc. as appropriate to the job).
Other
- Will be expected to respond to public health emergencies.
- Will require non-traditional working hours on occasion.

Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) is a federally qualified health center (FQHC) dedicated to providing comprehensive primary care services to homeless persons in the City of New Orleans and surrounding parishes for over 26 years under; the direction of the City of New Orleans Health Department. Our goal is to deliver quality, compassionate, and courteous healthcare to homeless individuals, regardless of ability to pay for services.
Salary
Salary will be contingent upon an assessment of the candidate’s verified experience, knowledge, and possession of related licenses.
