Head of New York Office
New York

Amnesty International, made up of millions of individual members and supporters, and is a truly global human rights movement. It is made up of people who are passionate about defending human rights for all, and who believe the world would be a better place if together we took injustice personally.
And by mobilizing the humanity in everyone, shining a light on human rights abuses wherever they may occur and speaking truth to power, for over 50 years now we have been making a tangible difference in the lives of those who are denied their basic rights, every hour, every day.
About the role:
As the Representative and Head of Office, New York – United Nations, you will deliver the inspirational leadership that drives the work of Amnesty International’s engagement with key global institutions such as the UN Security Council, the Third Committee of the General Assembly, and several others. You will effectively oversee the work of the International Advocacy Programme’s New York team. As the Amnesty global Movement’s senior representative in New York, you will lobby on our priorities at the UN, explaining and defending Amnesty International’s agreed human rights positions.
Crucially, you’ll gather and analyse ‘political intelligence’ and provide updates and advice to Amnesty’s international and regional offices, as well as national sections, on advocacy strategies, imperatives, and opportunities, ensuring key information and thinking is shared with those who need to know.
About you:
Ideally, you have worked within the UN, or as a creative and respected State representative to the UN or other major global Intergovernmental Organisation. If not, you have at least worked effectively and closely with these entities. With your proven experience of undertaking human rights advocacy at the UN, having worked closely with diplomats, state officials, senior policy makers and with other IGO bodies, you are well placed to identify and exploit advocacy opportunities and imperatives within the UN, and to react to global or localised political, economic and social developments. You have a strong track record of senior leadership and management success. You have well-known or easily discoverable experience effectively lobbying governments and intergovernmental agents for policy change.
You have sound knowledge of International Human Rights Law, International Relations, and of International Humanitarian Law. Not only are you, technically, an established leader and expert in the field of human rights advocacy, but also, you take injustice personally. You are able to represent Amnesty International at a senior level with government representatives, senior UN diplomats, and the media.
You have at least a postgraduate degree in Law, or other relevant discipline.
About us:
Our aim is simple: to bring the world closer to a place where human rights are enjoyed by all. Independent, international and influential, we campaign for justice, freedom and truth wherever they’re denied. Already our network of over three million members and supporters is making a difference in 150 countries. And whether we’re applying pressure through powerful research or direct lobbying, mass demonstrations, human rights education, or online campaigning, we’re all inspired by hope for a better world. One where human rights are respected and protected by everyone, everywhere.
