Zoo Keeper - State of Minnesota - Minneapolis-Saint Paul, MN





These positions are responsible for providing professional animal and exhibit care so that healthy, well-adjusted animals and attractive, instructive exhibits are presented to visitors of the MZG.

These positions will float from one trail to another to fill in behind other keepers who are on leave. The positions will report to the Bio-Programs Collections Manager, who will also determine assignments. Day to day lead work will be provided by the Supervisor of the trail to which the employee is assigned.

Duties of the position include providing direct care to assigned animals, including hosing and cleaning exhibits and holding areas; preparing diets and feeding animals; developing, performing and tracking enrichment activities; using operant conditioning to train animals; and assisting with medical procedures.

The position will also be responsible for preparing and maintaining detailed records, utilizing computer record keeping systems and ZIMS daily; using the MZG email system daily; and providing information to visitors including public interpretation. The position is expected to maintain a positive working relationship with all other staff and volunteers.

Days off and hours worked will vary and may change, based on needs of the units to which employees are assigned

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:
In order to qualify, applicants must possess either 1) a minimum of ine year of experience as a Zookeeper at a Zoo or Aquarium oe 2) three years of experience in a laboratory animal colony, veterinary hospital or research station, In order to be credited, this experience must include responsibility for observing animal behaviors, preparing and feeding animal diets, maintaining detailed animal records and maintaining sanitary animal living conditions.


Preferred Qualifications :
Bachelors or Masters degree in Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Management, Environmental Education, Ecology or a closely related field. Physical Requirements

The position may have exposure to biological materials and contaminants, zoonotic diseases and potent drugs, It must be able to wear a full-faced respirator, have a negative annual tuberculin test and pass an annual fit test medical survey. New employees will be required to be vaccinated for Rabies shortly after hire. The position requires the incumbent to work both as a team member and individually and to be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. The position must be able to work on uneven surfaces, stoop, crawl, kneel, stand, climb, and work outdoors in hot or cold, wet or dry conditions, in inclement weather as assigned.
