ABOUT THE POSITION Under supervision, to perform responsible clerical work which does not require speed typing skills; to utilize a variety of pertinent procedures, precedents and policies applicable to the subject matter area to which assigned; and to perform related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Incumbents in this class are expected to possess knowledge of clerical methods to perform simple to difficult clerical assignments, and are expected to use good judgment in recognizing the scope of their authority and in seeking assistance or making referrals.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Interviews individuals in a public office or over the telephone and obtains or furnishes the desired information or refers them to the proper source; completes or assists others with completion of a variety of forms, documents and records; receives money in payment of bills, fines and fees; gives receipts and keeps records of collections; sorts, codes, posts, proofs, alphabetizes, indexes and files a variety of materials; checks reports, records and other data for accuracy; researches, extracts, transfers and summarizes information from records; prepares statistical reports; prepares acknowledgment and replies to letters; screens and schedules appointments; accepts and delivers messages; pages and locates staff; counts and balances cash; receives, distributes and dispatches mail; follows up on materials sent to other people for review or completion; keeps stock of office supplies and orders new supplies when needed; operates a variety of office equipment, including a typewriter, copier, calculator and dispatch radio; may operate a switchboard periodically; may serve as receptionist.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following: Knowledge of: Modern office practice and procedures; proper techniques in operation of modern office machines. Ability to: Perform responsible clerical work under general supervision; use good judgment in choosing among available alternatives; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationship. These employment standards are typically attained with one year of experience comparable to that of a Clerk I, Typist Clerk I or Office Assistance I with Shasta County. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. As part of the selection process, all individuals provided with a preliminary offer of employment with Shasta County will be subject to a background investigation, including a criminal history check (primarily completed through the taking of fingerprints). An image of your fingerprints will be captured and sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history , (if any) , will be evaluated along with the other information received in connection with your application . Positions in this classification are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the County and the United Public Employees of California (UPEC) – General
Employees in this classification are covered under the CalPERS retirement program. Depending on the provisions of the California Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) and other applicable laws, an employee in this classification will be covered under one of the following CalPERS retirement formulas: (1) 2% at 55, (2) 2% at 60, or (3) 2% at 62. An employee in this classification will also contribute 7% of his/her pay to this plan, or will contribute such other amount to the plan as authorized by PEPRA and other applicable laws.
