POSITION DESCRIPTION
:
An opportunity is anticipated for a self-motivated, hardworking individual, with strong resource management, visitor services, protection, and maintenance experience to fill a Park Services Specialist position at Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park. Peacock Springs’s resources include nearly 760 acres of unique natural and cultural resources with many diverse recreational opportunities such as swimming, open water diving, cave diving, picnicking, nature appreciation, educational programs, and hiking.
This career service position will be involved in all aspects of the parks operation, and will require the incumbent to work independently. Strong public relations skills, program development and organizational skills. Knowledge of FPS dive policies, resource management techniques and prescribed fire are essential.
The selected candidate will be responsible for all administrative functions, maintenance programs, park protection, resource management, and visitor service needs of the park. The candidate must be able to work independently, and without immediate supervision.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Visitor Services:
Explains facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions and enforces FPS dive policies. Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations. Provides natural and cultural history interpretive programs and services via tours, walks, and other means.
Resource Management:
Understands issues with non-native species and implements vegetation and wildfire management plans; recognizes communities and maintains optimum species control via natural, mechanical and chemical means. Implements site restoration projects such as reforestation and erosion control. Implements water resource management plans.
Collects and records resource management data.
Maintenance:
Construct, maintain and repair small buildings, fences, trails, service roads, fire lanes, boardwalks, picnic sites, tools and equipment and all other necessary facilities. Maintain cleanliness of grounds and facilities. Performs routine inspections to ensure proper maintenance standards are met.
Administration:
Conducts revenue collection and reporting. Prepares forms and reports on a wide range of subjects including visitor use, visitor contacts, patrols, wildlife sighting and population counts, accidents, incidents, vehicle and equipment operations, property records, p-cards, purchase orders and requisitions, etc. Answers telephone, operates radio equipment, personal computer and maintains logs. Answers correspondence and maintains park files. Assists with volunteer and citizen support organization coordination. Acts as liaison between park and District Park Programs Development Specialist.
Protection:
Performs routine patrols and ensures visitors safety and enjoyment by enforcing park rules pertaining to all natural, historical and archaeological facilities and resources. Opens and/or secures park facilities as appropriate. The duties of this position require the incumbent to reside on the property.

Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:
Knowledge Of:
methods & techniques used in repair and/or maintenance of park facilities, equipment & grounds; administrative practices to include but not limited to daily & monthly reports, collection of park fees & purchasing policies; an understanding of the principles of natural resource management & its application & Florida Park Service diving policies is required.
Skill In:
using a variety of hand & power tools/equipment; maintenance of facilities & grounds; the operation & use of various kinds of equipment including tractors, zero radius mower, etc.; using a state computer & associated software programs, e-mail, internet, cash register & calculator.
Ability To:
work independently while balancing a wide variety of responsibilities; perform a variety of skilled trade functions; communicate effectively verbally & in writing; establish & maintain effective working relationships with others; perform physical labor using assorted power/gas tools & equipment; perform natural resource management & related activities; accurately prepare reports; collect fees; understand & apply rules & regulations; identify & investigate problems; work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends & holidays; reside on park property; successfully complete range academy; maintain a valid driver’s license; successfully complete background & fingerprint check.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES FOR THE POSITION
:
Knowledge In:
Archaeological Resource Monitoring; invasive exotic plant management.
Skill In:
using various hand tools, power tools, small engines & vehicle operation including mowers & tractors; conducting various environmental & cultural history interpretive programs.
Ability To:
participate in all aspects of the prescribed burn program; pass the moderate pack test of a two mile hike with a 25 pound pack in 30 minutes or less (no running allowed); work in smoke filled, hot & humid conditions; operate a tractor to maintain park roads.
