the positions of Co-op Advisor in the Office of Career Development and Co-operative Education (co-op). This positions will assist students
with finding a co-op position as well as building and maintaining relationships with co-op employers.
Speed and Cooperative
Education Background
At UofL Speed School of Engineering, we have experienced very strong enrollment growth in recent years,
both in quantity and quality of students. Twenty percent of our incoming students are in the 99th percentile on the ACT exam and our average
student is in the 95th percentile. We are attracting the very best students in the region and we have consistently found that there is a
strong correlation between where students co-op and where they work after graduation.
Speed is accredited by ABET at both the
Bachelor’s and Master of Engineering degree levels and has had a mandatory co-op program since its establishment in 1925. Students normally
co-op with the same employer for three alternating semesters (a total of 50 weeks) beginning in their fifth semester of study. There is
neither a contract for the employer nor a fee to participate. The employer’s role is to:
- Provide full-time work that is relevant
to the student’s major, appropriate for the level of student, and appropriate for the semester time period - Provide increasingly
challenging work assignments over the course of the three co-ops - Identify an engineering supervisor willing and able to mentor the
student - Provide a competitive wage
- Evaluate the student’s performance
In return, companies have access to
motivated, productive engineers who can perform entry-level engineering tasks and free your experienced personnel to work on higher
priorities. The Speed co-op program is mandatory for all engineering students seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in any one of our seven
engineering departments:
- Bioengineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Engineering
& Computer Science - Electrical Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
