Position Summary


The Accounts Payable Accountant will perform day-to-day accounting and administrative tasks related to the efficient processing, and maintenance of accounts payable transactions in strict adherence to set procedures. She/he will audit accounts and balances, and provide financial reports. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Accounting Manager.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration with emphasis in accounting

  • Minimum 1-3 years of relevant experience in accounts payable or bookkeeping

  • Six months international non-profit or public accounting experience preferred

  • Experience using accounting software such as Deltek Costpoint, and Cognos Report writer

  • Proficiency in data entry, and 10-key by touch operation

  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

  • Some knowledge of USG Circulars, to include OMB A110, A122, and A133 preferred

  • Strong ability to apply GAAP, and work within strict guidelines and procedures

  • Strong ability to understand the flow of transactions and use an integrated accounting system

  • Excellent attention to detail, specifically when working with numbers

  • Strong analytical skills, and excellent judgment in problem solving and decision making

  • Strong ability to plan, organize, prioritize work under pressure to meet tight deadlines

  • Ability to successfully work with diverse groups with limited or no understanding of accounting

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a client-service focus, and respond to inquiries in a courteous and professional manner

  • Awareness and understanding of human rights and democracy promotion

Some Duties and Responsibilities


  • Review AP documentation for completeness and process checks, wire transfers and ACH payments

  • Apply code and make prompt and accurate GL entries using Deltek

  • Generate journal report, and verify postings against invoice and supporting documentation

  • Maintain accurate payment activities, and reconcile and adjust payments as appropriate

  • Respond to inquiries regarding outstanding invoices and billing problems professionally

  • Assist in reconciliation of bank statements, and provide back-up accounting services as needed

  • Resolve all-work related problems promptly, and use good judgment in escalating issues

  • Ensure all work products comply fully with standards, policies, and mission with Freedom House

  • Other duties as assigned
